Local track stars win SCIAC Athlete of the Week awards

Senior tracks standout Darron Usher of University of Redlands and Lenore Moreno of University of La Verne are the SCIAC Athletes of the Week.

Usher (Yucaipa HS) won three events at the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet with two career-best showings. He also had three second-place finishes en route to leading the Bulldogs to an undefeated SCIAC Multi-Dual season.

Usher tied his career-best height in the high jump with a first-place performance of 6′ 6 ¾” while uncorking the fastest time of his career in the 110 hurdles (15.23) for first place.  As the lead member of the 4×100 Relay team, he helped the Bulldogs to garner another season-best winning time of 41.37 seconds.

He also notched second in the 400 hurdles (55.02), long jump (22′ 5″) and triple jump (43′ 9 ¼”).

Moreno won her section of the 5,000 meters at the 56th annual Mt. San Antonio College Relays with a time of 16 minutes, 28.26 seconds, which shattered a 32-year-old SCIAC record set by Cindy Nagle (16:38.1) of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in 1982.

Moreno also set a new La Verne standard, surpassing Janice Krich’s mark of 17:14 set in 1993.

Moreno’s time currently ranks second in Division III this season. Cara DeAngelis of Ohio Wesleyan posted a 16:25.30 at the Jesse Owens Classic to take the top spot on Saturday.
