The Cal State San Bernardino volleyball program has established itself as an elite program under the leadership of Kim Cheniss. So it is no surprise that the Coyotes start the new season ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
The Coyotes, 27-6 last year, open the new season against Hawaii Pacific on Sept. 5 at Central Washington’s Hampton Inn Wildcat Invitational in Ellensburg, Wash.
The No. 8 spot is CSUSB’s best since opening the 2012 season in the No. 3 position.
Cherniss begins her 24th season at the helm and welcomes back two All-Americans (senior middle blocker Tori May and junior middle blocker Brenna McIntosh) and four All-CCAA members (May, McIntosh, senior libero Arielle McCullough and junior outside hitter Alexandra Torline) from a 2013 team that won its eighth straight conference title and reached the West Regional for an unprecedented 14th straight year.
Three CCAA schools appear in the top 25 with No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 16 Sonoma State joining the Coyotes. The West Region also is represented by two-time defending regional champion BYU-Hawaii at No. 4 and No. 12 Western Washington.
Seven-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul is at the top spot.
