Alta Loma graduate earns college volleyball honor

Cal State Los Angeles senior Loreal Carter has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 29 – Oct. 5.

Carter, a graduate of Alta Loma High School, helped the Golden Eagles remain atop the CCAA with wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Stanislaus, and Chico State.

Carter started the week by recording a triple-double – the first of the season and second of her career – in a five-set win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Eagles Nest. Carter had 14 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks in the 25-18, 21-25, 30-32, 25-18, 15-8 victory.

She then had a team-high 11 kills, three service aces and three blocks in a 25-20, 25-19, 26-24 win at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday before delivering 15 kills, nine digs and five blocks in a 25-17, 25-18, 12-25, 23-25, 21-19 win over Chico State on Saturday. Carter had a pair of crucial kills to help Cal State L.A. stave off seven match points in the fifth set against the Wildcats.

For the week, Carter tallied 40 kills, 18 blocks and 23 digs, with a hitting percentage of .312.

The weekly award is the first of Carter’s career.

Carter has been enjoying an outstanding senior season. She is second on the team with 117 kills and is third with 38 blocks. Carter also leads the Golden Eagles with 14 service aces.

Cal State L.A. (10-2, 8-1 CCAA) holds sole possession of first place in the conference with two big CCAA matches at the Eagles Nest this week. The Golden Eagles will host eight-time defending conference champion Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday night before playing Humboldt State on Friday night. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. starts.
