Freshman linebacker Evan Lloyd was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week for his role in helping the Sagehens to a 24-0 shutout win over Whittier on Saturday.

Lloyd had 12 tackles (six solo) to lead a defense that held Whittier to only 176 total yards of offense and no points in picking up its first shutout since a 37-0 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the 2012 season finale (which was its first shutout since 2000).

In addition to his tackle numbers, Lloyd also stopped two Whittier drives in the second half in Pomona-Pitzer territory. After the Sagehens had gone ahead 14-0 on a blocked punt return, Lloyd stopped the ensuing drive with a sack, forced fumble and recovery to set up a field goal which pushed the lead to 17-0.

In the fourth quarter, with Whittier still hoping to engineer a comeback, Lloyd made a big tackle on 4th-and-1, bursting through the line to tackle the Poets’ ball carrier for a one-yard loss.

With his big performance, Lloyd has now taken over the team lead in tackles in a very close race with 41, one ahead of junior safety Nelson Cole (who missed the Whittier game with an injury) and senior safety Don Swan (who led the SCIAC in tackles as a sophomore).
