Pomona-Pitzer to host USA men’s national water polo match

Bret Bonanni and the Men's Senior National Team will take on Italy in a three game series

The United States national men’s water polo team will square off against Italy at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Pomona-Pitzer’s Haldeman Pool.

Tickets for that match will be available on-site, available to USAWP members for $20 and non-members for $25. The match will also stream live on GoLivePolo.com.

The same teams battled to a 10-10 draw on Sunday in a match played at Newport Harbor High School.

Pomona-Pitzer coach Alex Rodriguez was instrumental in getting the match scheduled for the Inland Valley area and is hoping for a good turnout.

“I have always wanted to host something like this here,” said Rodriguez who has several coaching positions for USA water polo including working as head coach of the 18-under team.

“Water polo is predominantly Orange County so to have this here is a big deal. This is the first time we have had a men’s or women’s team, competing in the area.”

Rodriguez added that the team that will compete locally will consist of most of the players who will represent the United States in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. The squad is led by a four-time Olympian in Tony Azevedo.
