Redlands athlete earns All-American honors

Maddie Smith

Senior Maddie Smith of the University of Redlands earned All-American honors with an eighth place finish in the high jump at the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C.

While making her first-ever appearance at the indoor championships, Smith cleared a height of 5′ 5″, which landed her fifth among a group of eight competitors with the same mark.  In order to break the tie where possible, the number of missed attempts is evaluated, allowing Smith to make her way onto the podium in eighth place.

Smith has advanced to three national championship meets in her career thus far, but garners her first All-American accolade in her inaugural indoor performance.  She is also the first student-athlete from Redlands to compete at the indoor nationals.

Gladys Njoku of Stevens Institute took home the High Jump title with a height of 5′ 7 ¾”.
