ESPN’s Shelley Smith to appear at Chaffey College

Chaffey College equipment manager and jack-of-all trades Justin Caudill is passionate about his school and its athletic teams, He is equally passionate about raising awareness and funds for cancer charities.

Well he hit a home run in his latest endeavor. Caudill has enlisted the help of ESPN sports reporter and breast cancer survivor Shelley Smith who will be on hand for the school’s 5:30 p.m. volleyball match against Victor Valley on Friday. She’ll address the crowd after the match, answer questions and mingle with the crowd.

Caudill’s mother Denise was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and just hit the 10-year clean milestone.

Caudill reached out to Smith on Twitter and she answered back. Finding a good date was the biggest problem. The school had just a couple of home soccer or volleyball dates in the month of October. Smith’s travel schedule has also been hectic. She was at Notre Dame last week for the football game against USC and she’ll be in San Francisco for the 49ers-Seahwaks football game this Thursday night.

“She was always willing to come but it was a matter of her schedule and it was hard to coordinate,” Caudill said. “It was literally she’s coming, then she’s not, and then she is.

Both volleyball teams will wear pink uniforms in honor of the cause.

There is no admission charge for spectators. Luminary bags will be sold for $15 each.

Each will have pink ribbons and can be decorated in honor of someone who is fighting or has overcome breast cancer. The bags will line the walkway leading up tp the sports center.

Those that want to make a donation or purchase a luminary back can go on line through the Chaffey College Foundation. Link here.

This is not Caudill’s first fund-raising effort, He raised $1,500 through a 5K race two years ago and was part of a Coaches vs. Cancer basketball event in February at Chaffey that raised $1,200 for the American Cancer Society.
