Cal State volleyball standout Brenna McIntosh sidelined

The Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team is just one game behind defending champion Sonoma State (16-3, 12-1) but the Coyotes title hopes took a significant blow over the weekend as senior Brenna McIntosh sustained a sprained ankle and fractured foot when a player from Cal State Stanislaus came down on the Coyotes side of the net and McIntosh came down on her foot and rolled her ankle.

The Coyotes (19-3, 12-2) still prevailed in that match and the next night against Chico State, both by 3-0 scores.

The injury is expected to sideline McIntosh, a two-time All-American that owns all the school’s career blocking records, for six weeks.

The Coyotes have six matches left in the regular season, the last of those on Nov. 14. Then it’s on to the CCAA Tournament to be held at UC San Diego.

McIntosh, a 6-foot middle blocker, ranks second in the CCAA in hitting percentage (.420) and is first in blocks per set (1.40).

The Coyotes will be at home to face Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.

Brenna McIntosh notches Cal State San Bernardino career record

The Cal State San Bernardino volleyball program has produced a half dozen All-Americans at the middle blocker position. So being the school’s career leader in any category is quite the accomplishment.

Senior Brenna McIntosh put herself there over the weekend in the Coyotes 3-1 win over Cal State San Marcos.

McIntosh had already broken the school record in solo blocks the first weekend of the season but her latest comes in the category of total blocks. She managed four in that match to giver her 500, two more than former All-American Kim Morohunfola.

“It’s exciting,” she said. “When I came here as a freshman I would have never thought I’d be able to do something like that. It comes with having a good coaching staff and good team around me.”

McIntosh now owns career records in solo blocks (99) and total blocks (500). She needs five block assists to own that record as well, held by Morohunfola (405, 2000-03).

McIntosh said she was aware of the impending record. Sports Information Director Mark Reinhiller had written about it earlier and her grandmother had been keeping track.

“I knew I was close but when you’re out there playing it isn’t something you think about,” she said. “You’re just playing.”

Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team starts ranked 19th

Brenna McIntosh

Cal State San Bernardino will start the season ranked No. 19 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. It is the 15th straight year the Coyotes have begin the new season ranked as one of the country’s best.

The Coyotes have won six NCAA regional titles, 11 CCAA titles and earned 15 consecutive NCAA tourney berths in the 25-year tenure of coach Kim Cherniss.

Cal State will be coming back after what was a down season for them. The Coyotes went 21-7  but saw an impressive streak of 8 straight CCAA title come to an end. Even more impressive was a stretch of 14 straight appearances in the West Region final that also came to an end.

The Coyotes face three teams in the preseason poll — No. 8 Colorado School of Mines on Sept. 5, No. 12 Sonoma State on Oct. 2 and No. 20 Northwest Nazarene on Sept. 4.

Five West Region schools are in the poll with No. 11 BYU-Hawaii and No. 24 Western Washington joining Cal State, Sonoma and Northwets Nazarene. Five other West schools — including Cal State L.A. — received votes.

The Coyotes are led by senior two-time All-American MB Brenna McIntosh, who begins the season among the leading blockers among active players in D2 with 93 solo blocks, 353 block assists and 446 total blocks. Her first solo block in 2015 will make her CSUSB’s all-time career leader, surpassing Kim Morohunfola. She needs 53 block assists and 54 total blocks to also earn those school records.
