Cal State San Bernardino player honored

Junior guard Trinidee Trice of Cal State San Bernardino is this week’s Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week for game Jan. 7-13.

She had double-doubles in both games last weekend. The Riverside native scored 13 points in the Coyotes win Friday over Cal State Stanislaus and followed it up with 22 points in a narrow loss to No. 9 Chico State on Saturday night.

She also averaged 11 rebounds.

On the season Trice is averaging 11.6 points, 11th in the CCAA.

Marcus Walters of Cal State Stanislaus was the Men’s Player of the Week. He averaged 20 points in two wins for the Warriors.

Oliver looks to have another contender at Cal State

A week ago the jury was out on the Cal State San Bernardino men’s basketball team. Yes the Coyotes looked to have a solid team but they hadn’t really hit the road or played the leading contenders.

Last week they made a firm believer out of a lot folks.

The Coyotes (8-1, 6-0) won three games in six days, all on the road. They started with a win against travel partner UC San Diego on Sunday. Then it was a road game at Humboldt State on Thursday. Remember there’s no easy way to get there, so that game takes three days – a day go get there, you play the next, then another day to get home.

Coach Jeff Oliver & Company didn’t get back until 4 p.m. or so Friday, leaving no time to prepare for Saturday’s game, oh yeah, against the No. 6 team in the country Cal Poly Pomona. And the Coyotes won that one too.

This team has the intangibles that have been lacking the last two years when the Coyotes failed to make the playoffs. They are unselfish, they play together and they really seem to like each other. Oliver seems to like these players too.

The team has made a habit of puling out close games, a lot of them. And it’s not the same guy always making the plays.

The Coyotes have a dominant big man in Kwame Alexander, who has broadened his game and is more than just a shot blocker and a dunk machine.

They have a bunch of sharp-shooters that can light it up from the perimeter - Lacy Haddock, Brian Goins, Jamari Simmons. Oliver also has more unheralded players that can also drain them in Taylor Statham, Johnny Bell and Juan Martinez. That’s a lot of weapons.

They’re fast. They’re athletic. And they are very fun to watch.

Next up are home games on Friday and Saturday against Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State. Then they’re on the road for six straight.

I think this team will be in it for the long haul!

Picks for this week’s local college football games

There isn’t a lot of action on tap locally this weekend with most of the area teams hitting the road.

Here’s the rundown of six games involving area teams and my guess as to how they will come out.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (0-6, 0-4) at Redlands (3-3, 3-1), 7 p.m.

Not a tough one here. The Bulldogs are not clicking on all cylinders offensively but they won’t need to be against a young, overmatched Stags team. Redlands wins 45-21.

La Verne (3-3, 3-1) at Chapman (4-2, 3-1), 7 p.m.

Probably the toughest to pick of local games. The Leopards are the up and coming team in the SCIAC. Both teams have a stellar running back. It likely comes down to what others bring to the table. I will go with Chapman at home, 27-21.

Pomona-Pitzer (0-6, 0-4) at Occidental (1-5, 1-3), 7 p.m.

Much here hinges on whether the Sagehens are with or without RB Luke Sweeney. Oxy is struggling like it hasn’t in a long while but it is playing at home and has a good passing game which will make the difference. Oxy 42, Pomona-Pitzer 17

San Bernardino Valley (4-3, 3-1) at San Diego Mesa (3-4, 2-2), 6 p.m.

The Wolverines have gotten on a roll offensively but need a better showing defensively than what they have been getting. They likely get by again. SBVC 42, San Diego Mesa 32

Chaffey (2-5, 2-2) at East Los Angeles (4-3, 1-3), 6 p.m.

The Panthers have had trouble stopping the passing game and ELAC has one of the best. Than in itself is a big problem. Now throw in the fact they have an injured kicker. Probably won’t end well.  ELAC 48, Chaffey 21

Compton (0-7, 0-4) at Victor Valley (1-6, 0-4), 1 p.m.

The Rams have been bad. But no one is as bad as Compton, whose losing streak dates back to 2010. Victor will come out of its slump easily. Victor Valley 38, Compton 7

Coyotes fall to No. 20 in AVCA poll

The Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team remains nationally ranked despite a 3-5 start but the Coyotes did fall from No. 11 to No. 20.

All five of the team’s losses are to nationally ranked foes and four of the losses came to teams in the top 13. The Coyotes also played the last four matches with All-American setter Camille Smith who is out with a hand injury.

The Coyotes have been ranked in the top 25 for 168 straight weeks, dating back to the 2000 season.

Here is this week’s poll which features a new No. 1.
