Cal Poly Pomona baseball players sweep weekly CCAA honors

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team raked in the honors this week as senior right-hander Chris Powell was named CCAA Pitcher of the week while senior infielder Nick Cooksey took home Player of the Week honors.

Powell, an Upland High School graduate, earned the win in the second game of the Broncos doubleheader at Cal State Monterey Bay. He went six and two-third scoreless innings and gave up just three hits while striking out 10.

On the season he boasts a 3-0 record and an ERA of 0.32.
Powell is the second Cal Poly Pomona player to earn weekly honors. J.J. Franklin took home the award for his showing in games Feb. 2-8.

Cooksey, a graduate of Glendora High School, went 9-for-16 in the four-game series against the Otters. He recorded hits in all four games and had multiple hits in three of those.

He his hitting .343 four doubles, a triple, three home runs and 13 RBI on the season.

The Broncos (14-4, 6-2) open a four-game set at Sonoma State (10-10, 5-7) on Friday.
