U of Redlands softball team gearing up for stretch run

The University of Redlands softball team moved up to No. 7 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Poll.  Redlands (27-7) remains the highest of three Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) programs to be included among the nation’s top 25.

The strength of the conference in the sport is apparent with  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (22-10) and Chapman (22-8) also making the cut at No. 18 and 21 respectively.

The Bulldogs have six games left – doubleheaders against Cal Lutheran, Chapman and CMS. And CMS also has a doubleheader with Chapman. So all the contenders are playing each other.

Of course the regular season is just for bragging rights. It is the four-team SCIAC tournament that decides the automatic qualifier. But the conference does have a good history of advancing a second, and even a third team.

This year all three of those teams should advance to regional play.

CMS golfer earns weekly honor

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps junior golfer Bradley Shigezawa has been selected as the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week of March 11.

Shigezawa finished tied for first at the Collegiate Invitational in Jekyll Island, Ga. It is the third time that a CMS spring student-athlete has been named Athlete of the Week this season and first male student-athlete to be selected.

Shigezawa shot a 1-over 217 for the three-day tournament at the par-72 Pine Lakes Golf Course. The Honolulu, Hawaii native shot rounds of 71, 72 and 74.

His first round score of 1-under, 71 was the third lowest score of the weekend out of a field of 150 golfers. Shigezawa has had the top score for CMS in each of its three tournaments this spring.

CMS athlete gets weekly nod

Just days after pitching a complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win over preseason NAIA No. 1 Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sophomore Hayley Schultz has been named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Female Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 4 – Feb. 10.

This is the first SCIAC Athlete of the Week selection for Schultz.

The Los Angeles native allowed just five hits and struck out one without yielding a walk. Schultz is just the second pitcher to shut out the Cougars in their last 67 games. She also recorded five assists in the game.

Schultz is 2-1 overall with a 1.17 ERA in 2013 and has held opponents scoreless in two of her first three outings this season. As a freshman in 2012, Schultz was named SCIAC Newcomer of the Year and second team All-West Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

CMS, Pomona-Pitzer rivalry full of fun and intensity

I had Wednesday off and entertainment options were few. I could have stayed home and watched American Idol but wasn’t excited about seeing Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj go at each other.

So I headed over to Ducey Gymnasium, just a few miles from home, for the men’s basketball game between Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer. I had always heard good things about the rivalry and never had the opportunity to take in a game with the majority of my game nights spent at Cal Poly Pomona or Cal State San Bernardino.

I arrived at 6:45 p.m., 45 minutes before tip-off, only to find a crowd of 100 or so in line waiting for the doors to open. I was able to find my way in before the crowd. Moments later people flooded in. By 7 p.m. it was standing room only – even that was hard to come by.

The CMS student side filled up fastest with all wearing either their gold or garnet T-shirts. Yes there were the obligatory men with the letters S-T-A-G-S printed on their bare chests. But we also had a guy in a skin tight gold leotard, with us those of us as the scorer’s table guessing he was supposed to be an Oscar’s statue. The leotard left little to the imagination. There was another guy dressed similarly in green. Not quite sure what  he was supposed to be.

The Pomona-Pitzer folks in the balcony also had their lively moments despite being outnumbered by quite a bit. The rooting sections took turns with chants during pregame warm-up. Only here would winning the jump ball warrant a standing ovation.

Both teams had trouble scoring early but Sagehens coach Charlie Katsiaficas says that often happens, with the teams taking a few minutes to settle into the rhythm of the game.

One thing struck me. It was so loud from start to finish I can’t see how the players could hear instructions being shouted from their coaches.

The other thing I noticed . . the lack of whistles early. It wasn’t until the 12:15 mark that the first personal foul was called. The referees pretty much let them play all night.

Games between the two usually go down to the wire but this time the Sagehens couldn’t get over the hump and the Stags won 65-58 behind a career night from Jack Grodahl who had 28 points, 20 of those in the first half.

It was unlike anything I had seen at a college event in my decade in Southern California.Real true passion from both sides. Nowhere else can there be two campuses so close together athletes from one have to walk through the other to get to practice.

I have heard its like that in other sports too but the fact that basketball is in an enclosed venue where the crowd is right on the court adds to the atmosphere. Both schools have good history in the sport too so they’re usually playing for more than bragging rights.

All in all a fun night out!

Picks for this week’s local college football games

There isn’t a lot of action on tap locally this weekend with most of the area teams hitting the road.

Here’s the rundown of six games involving area teams and my guess as to how they will come out.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (0-6, 0-4) at Redlands (3-3, 3-1), 7 p.m.

Not a tough one here. The Bulldogs are not clicking on all cylinders offensively but they won’t need to be against a young, overmatched Stags team. Redlands wins 45-21.

La Verne (3-3, 3-1) at Chapman (4-2, 3-1), 7 p.m.

Probably the toughest to pick of local games. The Leopards are the up and coming team in the SCIAC. Both teams have a stellar running back. It likely comes down to what others bring to the table. I will go with Chapman at home, 27-21.

Pomona-Pitzer (0-6, 0-4) at Occidental (1-5, 1-3), 7 p.m.

Much here hinges on whether the Sagehens are with or without RB Luke Sweeney. Oxy is struggling like it hasn’t in a long while but it is playing at home and has a good passing game which will make the difference. Oxy 42, Pomona-Pitzer 17

San Bernardino Valley (4-3, 3-1) at San Diego Mesa (3-4, 2-2), 6 p.m.

The Wolverines have gotten on a roll offensively but need a better showing defensively than what they have been getting. They likely get by again. SBVC 42, San Diego Mesa 32

Chaffey (2-5, 2-2) at East Los Angeles (4-3, 1-3), 6 p.m.

The Panthers have had trouble stopping the passing game and ELAC has one of the best. Than in itself is a big problem. Now throw in the fact they have an injured kicker. Probably won’t end well.  ELAC 48, Chaffey 21

Compton (0-7, 0-4) at Victor Valley (1-6, 0-4), 1 p.m.

The Rams have been bad. But no one is as bad as Compton, whose losing streak dates back to 2010. Victor will come out of its slump easily. Victor Valley 38, Compton 7

CMS names women’s tennis coach

Gretchen Magers has been named the head coach for CMS
women’s tennis. She joins CMS effective immediately.

“Gretchen brings a phenomenal background of competitive experiences
in tennis: Collegiate, International, Olympic, and as a teaching pro,”
Athletic Director Mike Sutton said.  “All this is coupled with her enthusiasm, energy, and
excitement for the opportunity of working with a team of
student-athletes who have the potential to excel in collegiate tennis.
We are very fortunate to have Coach Magers in our program and I look
forward to the continued growth and success of Athena tennis.”

Magers has been the head women’s tennis coach for San Diego City
College since 2008.  She has previously served as head women’s tennis
coach at Our Lady of Peace High School from 1995-97 and as an assistant
coach for the women’s tennis team at San Diego State University in the
1993-94 academic year.

“I can’t wait to get to Claremont and help the CMS Athenas tennis
team reach new heights,” said Magers.  “It is a dream come true for me
to be at a school like the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.  The
academic reputations, the exceptional student bodies and world class
facilities make for an ideal environment for our student-athletes to
thrive.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with the returning
players.”

Magers played 10 years on the WTA tour and was a top 20 singles and
doubles player. She was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open, French Open
and Wimbledon. She represented the United States in the 1984 Olympics,
the World University Games, the Pan American Games and the Senior ITF
World Championships.  Collegiately, she was a four-time All-American at
Trinity University where she was NCAA doubles champion in 1983 and NCAA
runner-up in singles and doubles in both 1985 and 1986.

Magers replaces Mazanne Retzlaff who resigned earlier this summer after two decades directing the program.

Road warriors trying to hold on for conference title

The University of La Verne baseball team seemed in pretty good shape in the SCIAC a week or so ago but three straight losses have put the Leopards in a more precarious situation.

Sure the Leopards are in the preferable position of first place. It’s up to the other teams to try and play catch up. The Leopards lost to Pomona-Pitzer 8-2 today and it wasn’t really even that close.

So the Leopards are 23-13 and 18-7 in SCIAC play with games left against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Whittier and Cal Lutheran.

Pomona-Pitzer (22-12, 16-9) has a bit of an easier trek with a game left with lowly Caltech, CMS and Redlands.

Then there’s Cal Lutheran (20-13, 15-9) which has La Verne, Caltech, Occidental and Redlands.

La Verne has to be most worried about Pomon-Pitzer because it split that series, 2 games each. The Leopards won their first three games vs. Cal Lutheran so they already have that head-to-head tiebreaker.

It’s about to get interesting. La Verne is also likely to face top pitchers the rest of the way and the one from Whittier no-hit them the last time.

History might be a bit ominous. Call it the even-year crash and burn. in 2008 Pomona-Pitzer had a nice lead, only to lose its last six games, the title being decided with a loss on the final day, to of all teams, La Verne.

In 2010 Redlands lost five of its last six, dropping five in a row before ending the season with a win over Caltech. Pomona-Pitzer walked away the champion.

So now its 2012. Well . . .

It would be nice to see the Leopards finish the job. At the risk of being called a homer, the Leopards have prevailed in a tough situation, playing every game on the road with no home field to call their own, not just for this year but next year too.

They have never once complained or used that disadvantage as an excuse.
