John Shipp formally appointed to head SBVC football program

The interim label has been lifted and John Shipp is officially the head football coach at San Bernardino Valley College.

Shipp was first appointed a year ago but got the nod with an interim label because there wasn’t enough time to clear all the hurdles that needed to be cleared for a formal appointment.

He had to go through the application and interview process again this year and the board of trustees recognized that he was still the right man for the job.

“It’s nice to have it out the way because you never know,” he said, “I went about this like it was my job and I was going to be here because that’s the only way I know to do things. If it was going to be my job I wanted to be in the best position possible coming into this season and if it wasn’t I wanted to leave the best possible situation for the person coming in.”

Despite getting the job late last July he still led the team to a 6-4 regular season showing. The Wolverines were 4-3 in American Mountain Division play which was only good enough for third place.

While most counted the season as a success given how late Shipp came in, the coach thinks it could have been better. He admits he learned a lot in the fist year which will serve him well moving forward.

“As a competitor you always think you can do better,” he said. “There were definitely a couple of other games we could have won.”

There will be only minor tweaks to the coaching staff. Shipp calls the offense while Kenny Lawler remains the defensive coordinator. The most notable addition is former 49er Dana Hall who will coach the secondary.

SBVC opens the season at home on Sept. 5 against Santa Barbara City.

San Bernardino Valley College sophomore running back Kendrick Dorn has made a verbal commitment to Georgia State.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound standout visited the school Thanksgiving week. He also had offers from Division I schools Idaho, Hawaii, New Mexico and Sacramento State. but didn’t seed the need to visit those.

“I loved the people and the coaching staff,” he said. “It felt just like a family.”

Dorn, a graduate of Los Osos High School, rushed for 1,088 yards and 15 touchdowns. He ranked second in the American Division Mountain Conference in yards per game (108.8) and was first in touchdowns (15). He had eight games of 100 or more yards with a high of 163 against. Mt. San Jacinto.

Dorn said the chance to play right away was also inviting.

“They’re going into the spring with just one other running back and it’s a guy they had to move from corner,” he said. “I definitely think I’ll get a chance to play. I felt I’d have more of a chance right away there than I did at some of the other places.”
