Cal Poly Pomona’s Jordan Faison earns weekly honor

Jordan Faison has earned his second California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week after a stellar performance on Saturday. In the team’s lone contest this weekend, Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball topped the Humboldt State Jacks 86-76. The conference office announced its decision for the week of Jan. 18-24 on Tuesday.

Jordan FaisonFaison, a senior from Lake Forest, was nearly perfect from the field in the matchup as he sank 8-of-9 shots. His successful field goals added to his six good free throws landed him with 22 points, a figure that led both teams.

The forward was not done there however, as he nearly reached a double-double with nine rebounds. Adding to his points and boards, the 6-foot-7 Bronco dished out seven assists in the contest and also stifled the Jacks’ offense as he added a pair of blocks.

The Broncos will return to action on Thursday as they host the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes for Pack the Stands night at Kellogg Arena.

Three Cal State San Bernardino volleyball players named All-American

The Cal State San Bernardino women’s volleyball team might have fallen just short in its quest for a berth in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, but the success of the program has again been recognized.

McIntosh

Senior middle blocker Brenna McIntosh, junior middle blocker Malika O’Brien and senior outside hitter Alexandra Torline have all been named second-team All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The honors come just days after the Coyotes lost the West Regional final to Western Washington 3-2 (16-14 in the fifth set).

The honor is the third AVCA All-America nod for McIntosh and comes this season even though she missed the last six weeks of the regular season with an ankle injury.

McIntosh, a native of Yorba Linda, is the fifth Coyote to earn three All-America honors in her career as deemed by the AVCA. She leaves with five school records (match hitting percentage, match block assists, career total blocks, career solo blocks and career block assists). She finished the season with 231 kills and 112 total blocks.

O'Brien

O’Brien, a graduate of Alta Loma High School, wrapped up her first year in the program after transferring from Cal Baptist. She finished with 325 kills and 152 total blocks and earned All-Tournament honors at last week’s regional.

Torline, a native of Huntington Beach, registered 429 kills, 326 digs and 754 blocks.

She completed her career as the schools all-time leader in career points (1,926) and is the first player in school history to lead her team in kills for four seasons.

Torline

Torline had 30 kills in last Saturday’s 3-2 win over Alaska-Anchorage in the NCAA West Region semifinals made her only the sixth Coyote to post as many kills in a match and the first since Brie Harris’s NCAA record of 45 against UC San Diego in 2004.

Cal Poly Pomona soccer player named Best in the West

Gonzalez Diaz

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s soccer team is headed to the NCAA Division II Final Four. They’re also reaping some of the rewards that come with that success.

Senior Christian Gonzalez Diaz has been named West Region Player of the Year, leading four Broncos who earned All-West honors. Gonzalez Diaz, also earlier named CCAA Offensive Player of the Year, has 13 goals and five assists for 31 total points.

Senior midfielder Alexander Turkson and senior defender Justyn Peeples also earned spots on the first team while Matthew Perez was named to the second team.

Turkson is second on the squad with eight goals and five assists as well. Peeples is one of Cal Poly Pomona’s anchors on a defense that has allowed just 18 goals in 21 games while owning the 18th best goals against average in the country at 0.83.

CPP will play against Rockhurst on Thursday in Pensacola, Fla., at the site of the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s National Championship Tournament. The game time is set for 6 p.m. Pacific (8 p.m. Central).
