Chaffey equipment manager Justin Caudill enlisted the help of ESPN sports reporter Shelley Smith for a cancer fund-raiser.

A fund-raiser at Chaffey College on Friday organized by Panthers equipment manager Justin Caudill raised $2,300 that will go toward funding mammograms for women in the Inland Empire.

Caudill enlisted the help of ESPN sports reporter of Shelley Smith who spoke to the crowd at the event and answered questions on her recent experience with the breast cancer as well as on her storied career.

It was a bit of a whirlwind week for Smith who was in San Francisco for the Seahawks-49ers game Thursday night and was in Los Angeles for a interview with Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham Friday night. She left immediately from that work obligation and raced to Chaffey.

After speaking a crowd of about 80 following Chaffey’s volleyball match against Victor Valley, she event went over to the football field and took in a quarter of the prep football game between Los Osos and Rancho Cucamonga.

“She couldn’t have been any nicer and easy to work with,” Caudill said. “It was a great event.”

It was the third fundraising undertaking for Caudill, whose mother is a 10-year survivor of the disease. His goal was $1,500 so he was pleased.

“I wanted to make more than we did last year and we did that so I am very happy,” he said. “I keep setting the bar higher.”
