Redlands pitcher honored for no-hitter

Junior Josh Makler of the University of Redlands baseball team has been named to the Team of the Week for throwing a no-hitter against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown on Saturday.

In his 11th start of the season, the Portland, Ore. native threw a complete-game, no-hitter to become the first individual in at least 15 years of Bulldog baseball history to accomplish this feat.

He joins the trio of Kyle Hart, Casey Miller, and Brock Jacobo that went seven innings while not allowing a hit or walk in 2011 en route to a 12-0 win over Caltech.

Against the Stags, Makler registered a career-high 11 strikeouts and faced 34 batters in his SCIAC-leading seventh win of the season.

He hit .389, racking up 58 hits to rank second on the team in the category, while raking eight doubles and four triples in the process. Additionally, Dresner notched 21 RBI on the year to go along with an on-base percentage of .457 and a slugging percentage of .497.

Redlands player goes in MLS draft

With the 44th overall pick in the 2014 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft, the Philadelphia Union selected University of Redlands soccer standout Richie Marquez.

He was the only NCAA Division III student-athlete among this year’s class of draftees.  Marquez, a graduate of Bloomington High School, becomes the third Bulldog men’s soccer player to pursue a career in the MLS, following Ross Schunk ’09, who was drafted 47th overall by the Colorado Rapids in 2009, and Adam Acosta ’05, who signed with Real Salt Lake as a free agent in 2006.

“This is a tremendous honor for all of us here at the University of Redlands.  We felt all along that once Richie got invited to the combine that he could show the MLS coaches his skills and talents, and today really exemplifies that he belongs in the MLS.  We wish him all the best in succeeding in Philadelphia,” Head Men’s Soccer Coach Ralph Perez stated.

After shining at the 2014 MLS Player Combine last week, MLS coaches took notice of the Bulldog defender.  Not only did he turn heads on the field during each of his team’s three games at the combine, but he impressed in the off-field physical testing by ranking second overall in the Opta Jump (20.5″) and fifth in the 30-meter sprint (3.96 seconds).

Marquez racked up the accolades while playing for the Bulldogs, including a Third-Team All-America nod, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Player of the Year award, and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) First-Team All-West Region accolade.

After finding out that he had been selected by the Philadelphia Union, Marquez sat down with the Sports Information Office to talk about his draft-day experience.

He was one of just two players from the conference to make the list. The other was guard Justin LaLonde of Chapman who made the second team.

Redlands coach reaches milestone

For veteran coaches, the wins probably all run together. But University of Redlands men’s soccer coach Ralph Perez hit a milestone when the Bulldogs upended Chapman 3-1 earlier this week.

It marked the 300th win for Perez, who is rounding out his 39th year of coaching and eighth year directing the Bulldogs. He has headed a college squad for 26 of those seasons. He is 111-30-13 at Redlands.

In his eight years at Redlands Perez has led the Bulldogs to five SCIAC regular-season championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2007, the Bulldogs advanced all the way to the Elite 8, while in 2011, he guided the U of R to a perfect 14-0-0 record in conference play en route to a trip to the Sweet 16 in the NCAAs Championships.

This year’s Bulldogs are 11-4-0, 11-4-0 SCIAC. They return to the pitch on Saturday for its final regular-season contest against Pomona-Pitzer (8-10-1, 7-7-1 SCIAC). Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
