Redlands coach reaches milestone

For veteran coaches, the wins probably all run together. But University of Redlands men’s soccer coach Ralph Perez hit a milestone when the Bulldogs upended Chapman 3-1 earlier this week.

It marked the 300th win for Perez, who is rounding out his 39th year of coaching and eighth year directing the Bulldogs. He has headed a college squad for 26 of those seasons. He is 111-30-13 at Redlands.

In his eight years at Redlands Perez has led the Bulldogs to five SCIAC regular-season championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2007, the Bulldogs advanced all the way to the Elite 8, while in 2011, he guided the U of R to a perfect 14-0-0 record in conference play en route to a trip to the Sweet 16 in the NCAAs Championships.

This year’s Bulldogs are 11-4-0, 11-4-0 SCIAC. They return to the pitch on Saturday for its final regular-season contest against Pomona-Pitzer (8-10-1, 7-7-1 SCIAC). Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Redlands running back saluted

Curtis Tanquary led the Bulldogs to the vital 10-7 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday night en route to garnering SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors.

Sophomore running back Curtis Tanquary  of the University of Redlands football team was named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for Oct. 7-13.

Tanquary led the Bulldogs to a 10-7 victory over Cal Lutheran in the annual Smudge Pot game on Saturday night, carrying the ball 29 times for a career-high 161 yards.  While helping the team halt CLU’s 28-game SCIAC win-streak, he scored Redlands’ only touchdown of the defensive battle against the Kingsmen.

Tanquary registered big runs of 34 and 22 yards during each of the Bulldogs’ scoring drives en route to leading the Maroon and Gray to its first win over CLU since 2007.

Junior women’s soccer player Taylor Will of Cal Lutheran garnered the SCIAC Female Athlete of the Week honor.
