Fontana teacher found guilty of possessing child porn

A Loma Linda man, who taught elementary school in Fontana, was taken into custody Tuesday after a jury found him guilty of possessing child pornography.

Jurors returned the guilty verdict against Clark Alexander Mahoney Jr. after about an hour of deliberations at his trial in Fontana Superior Court, according to court records. He had been out of custody on his own recognizance.

Mahoney, 45, was found guilty of one count of Penal Code 311.11, defined as possession or control of child pornography, court records state. He is being held without bail at West Valley Detention Center, in Rancho Cucamonga, and he returns to court Nov. 4 for sentencing.

A teacher at Date Elementary School in Fontana, Mahoney was arrested last year on allegations of inappropriately touching two students.

Preliminary hearing delayed for former deputy

A preliminary hearing for former San Bernardino County sheriff’s Deputy Nathan Gastineau was postponed this morning until November so attorneys can have more time to review evidence.

Gastineau, 30, of Redlands, is charged with three counts of committing lewd acts with a minor and three counts of unlawful sexual intercourse. He is accused of having sex with a teen police Explorer.

His Redlands-based attorney, Andrew Haynal, asked San Bernardino Superior Court Judge John Martin for a continuance because he just received additional discovery or evidence in the case.

Gastineau is scheduled to return to court Nov. 1 to determine if the case is ready for a preliminary hearing Nov. 3.

Hospital tech sentenced in lewd act with patient

A former state hospital technician was sentenced Thursday to three years probation and time in county jail after he admitted to commiting a lewd act with an adult patient under his care.

Daniel I. Alawoya, a former tech at Patton State Hospital, was sentenced before Judge Robert J. Lemkau under the terms of a plea bargain reached Aug. 26 in San Bernardino Superior Court.

Alawoya, 58, was arrested in March after a transgender male patient alleged the defendant forcefully had sex with him. DNA evidence from the patient’s under clothing matched to Alawoya, according to a Probation Department pre-sentencing report.

Update: Judge rejects plea bargain for hospital tech in alleged rape case

A Superior Court judge has rejected the plea bargain for a former Patton State Hospital technician accused of attacking a patient at the mental health facility.

Daniel I. Alawoya appeared for a scheduled sentencing hearing Tuesday morning in San Bernardino Superior Court, when Judge Michael Dest surprisingly rejected the plea bargain, according to court records.

No reason was provided for the rejection of the plea bargain. The defendant is scheduled to return to court Oct. 23 for a status hearing.

Hospital tech set for sentencing Tuesday in San Bernardino

A former technician at Patton State Hospital is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday under the terms of a plea bargain in San Bernardino Superior Court.

Daniel I. Alawoya pleaded guilty to one count of commtting a lewd act with a female patient at the hospital in January, as part of an agreement with prosecutors, during proceedings on Aug. 26, according to court records.

Alawoya, 58, was released from custody, on his own recognizance, pending sentencing.
