Caltrans is also offering these holiday driving safety tips:
- Never drink and drive and always use seatbelts and child restraints.
- Bring chains if you are traveling to mountain areas - it is recommended to have chains in your vehicle during winter months. Make sure your gas tank is full before going up the hill. Go to www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/trucks/ops-guide/chains.html for more chain information.
- Chain installers are available on most mountain routes during chain control - please use the Caltrans approved installers with authorized bibs - for your safety and to protect your vehicle. Unauthorized vendors are subject to prosecution.
- For long trips - bring water, warm clothing/blankets, medications, snacks and other necessary items.
- Listen to local radio stations or check traffic reports on television for traffic conditions on the routes you plan to travel.
- Don't go around road closure signs in the event of inclement weather conditions. Never drive through running water or flooded roadways.
- Be a safe and courteous driver. It only adds a few minutes to your travel time and makes it a better drive for everyone.
