The holiday season leave your wallet a bit lighter? You can get a little money back from Uncle Sam by donating gently used clothing and other unwanted items to Goodwill Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County (Goodwill SOLAC) for an end-of-year tax write-off.

Goodwill SOLAC - which has been providing job training and employment services to those in the Southern Los Angeles County area since 1929 - uses the revenue from your donations for its education and career services for people with disabilities and disadvantages such as welfare dependency, homelessness, and lack of education or work experience.

"End the holiday season and start the New Year off right by giving the gift of hope," said Janet McCarthy-Wilson, President and CEO of Goodwill SOLAC. "Every donation to Goodwill SOLAC helps make 2010 a better year for thousands of individuals who need job training and other career services."

Goodwill accepts clothing, household items and unwanted holiday gifts. Televisions and computers also are accepted for recycling.

Donors interested in claiming tax deductions should keep itemized lists of donations. The Internal Revenue Service allows a deduction for each item, but the donor determines each item's value. Generally, an item's value should be based on fair market value - what the item would sell for in a thrift store. Goodwill provides receipts to donors at its drop-off sites and retail stores.

Hey, Karen, can you pass on a message to Janet McCarthy? I can't figure out to email her, but she has been my friend since we were 4 feet high(gradeschool) in Santa Maria.
We're off to the Olympics tomorrow and I was thinking of her. She is one of the nicest persons in the world, which is why Goodwill is doing great with her in Long Beach. And of course I will continue to donate to Long Beach. Thanks, David
