Four area businesses and organizations have been named state finalists for what the U.S. Government considers its "highest recognition" to employers who support employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve.
The Long Beach Public Library, Long Beach Firefighters Local No. 372, St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower and the Los Angeles County Police based in Downey were among the 160 California employers nominated for the 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, it was announced today.
About 190 California Guard and Reserve service members nominated their employers for the award, which have only been given to 130 companies since 1996.
Past winners have included Microsoft, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Sears, Home Depot, the State of Delaware, the Santa Ana, California Police Department and Augustine & Sons, a family-owned farm in Rose Hill, Iowa.
Many of the nominees have showed their support by giving continued benefits, differential pay and family assistance, according to the Freedom Award announcement. Winners will be chosen by a national selection board of senior defense officials and business leaders.
This summer, the Department of Defense will announce as many as 15 2010 Freedom Award winners, which will be recognized on Sept. 23 in Washington, D.C.
