New lifeguard and paramedic headquarters opens

| | Comments (0) |

Avalon's new state-of-the-art lifeguard and paramedic headquarters has been formally opened..

Lifeguards stationed at Baywatch Avalon cover approximately 40 square miles of the island and 10 miles out to sea, providing essential emergency services to the community.

The lifeguards have never had a permanent "home," county officials said, adding that the county had to rent a condo for the lifeguards to sleep in, but the emergency equipment had to be stored in another location. The new building provides housing for lifeguards.

The construction of the facility was paid for 100 percent by Los Angeles County at a cost of $4.27 million.

The county now requires that all of its buildings meet the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver certified, but the new Avalon Lifeguard Headquarters will receive a gold certification, making it the second fire department facility to achieve this design level, officials said.

OC Realtors help Long Beach homeless

Fifty agents from Keller Williams Realty Los Alamitos helped to feed more than 200 of Long Beach's homeless.

Agents at KW Los Alamitos joined thousands of Realtors from across the U.S. in celebrating the company's annual RED Day, or Renew, Energize and Donate Day.

The agents collected toiletries and purchased food for the event that was held outside the Christian Outreach in Action building at 515 3rd St.

"The vision for Red Day is that all Keller Williams associates actively engage in a coordinated effort to improve their local community," said Elaine Armogida, team leader at KW Los Alamitos. "Activities in the local area included rehabbing at a transitional home, cleaning up a local beach and a food drive for military families."

"It is always a little startling to see how many people live with such uncertainty on a daily basis," said Kevin Kelly of Chicago Title. "It was inspirational seeing the good that was done today."
