Dr. Guillermo A. Canjura Jr., Etiwanda School District board candidate

I am a family man, a dentist, a school volunteer, and a child advocate. My wife, Annette and I have been married 11 years. We live in Fontana and have one child who attends school in the Etiwanda School District. My community involvement and leadership experience includes being a Past PTA President, the current Rancho Cucamonga Council PTA Parliamentarian, and Tri-County Dental Association President (Riverside, San Bernardino and portions of Los Angeles). I have been a State Legislative Representative for CalDPAC and PTA.
If elected, one of my top priorities would be to increase parent representation at the school district. The district currently has the Wellness and Strategic Planning Committees. These committees are largely made up of administrators, staff, the District Superintendent and assistant superintendents. Out of 16 schools, only 2 parents are involved in each committee. It is my intention to have parent representatives from each school belong to these committees.
As recommended by the State Superintendent, Jack O’Connell, “High quality physical education is essential for the development of children.” Our district needs high quality physical education programs with qualified physical education instructors.
Studies by the State Superintendent cite increased student performance in Math and Language Arts in conjunction with high quality P.E. programs. Our children need to be taught habits that will last a lifetime. In addition, cutting the fats from school lunches and substituting with processed high calorie foods won’t keep our children from becoming obese. We need to provide more natural, wholesome foods. I am determined to improve student lunches and P.E. programs.
I will also lobby for equalization of state funding for the Etiwanda School District. We are the lowest funded district in San Bernardino County and we pay some of the highest taxes in the area. We need to get our legislators involved. We will need bi-partisan support. I am the candidate who has been endorsed by state congress members from both parties, Senator Gloria Negrete-McLeod and Assemblyman Bill Emmerson.
My experience at various levels in PTA has allowed me to listen to the concerns of parents throughout the district. Your views and opinions are important to me. It would also be my pleasure to answer any questions. Please visit my website at www.canjura4esb.com or e-mail me at info@canjura4esb.com. I appreciate your vote on November 4th so I can implement these essential objectives and bring a new perspective to the district.
