James B. Downs, Ontario-Montclair School District board candidate
My name is Jim Downs, and I am running for a position on the Ontario-Montclair School Board of Trustees. I am uniquely qualified for this position having served previously for 16 years on this Board from 1989 to 2005. I also served for 15 years elected by my peers to represent our Region 16 to the California School Board Association, and attended and graduated from the premier governance program sponsored by CSBA; Masters in Governance.
During those years, the other Board members and I worked together to meet the challenges of the future. We hired and promoted those persons who were tops in their fields and who would bring credibility to their respective departments. And, above all, we fostered a sense of adventure, and allowed those with ability and an innovative spirit to seek the best instructional tools and utilize them. We always put children first, and asked the driving question in all that we did, which is, of course, does this truly benefit the children of the Ontario-Montclair School District?
As a proven leader with over 16 years of previous Board experience, I am well versed in the requirements of the public school system. As your school board member, I will promote policies that encourage student achievement. This means having safe and comfortable classrooms. This means seeking adequate funding to be able to bring the best and latest technology available for students to use. This means making sure that our teachers are supported in all that they do to insure student learning. This means having students who know that there is zero tolerance for unacceptable behavior, and it means supporting programs which will help kids succeed. This also means making sure that the parents are truly partners in their child's education and shown how to provide a supportive environment to help them succeed.
The task ahead is clear. I believe that as long as the members of the Board work together, they will bring a quality education to the children in OMSD. I will work with the Board and staff to support all of our children and give them the best we can offer. We must allow our children to stretch and reach for their dreams, and, when necessary, we must even help them learn to dream. I would appreciate your vote in November.
