Norma Torres, 61st Assembly District candidate
My name is Norma Torres and I am the current mayor of Pomona. I also work as a bilingual 9-1-1 dispatcher and instructor for the Los Angeles Police Department. Previously, I served as a member of Pomona's city council.
Throughout my career in public service I have fought to protect the public safety to make Pomona a better place to live. In 1994, I led the effort to require the hiring of bilingual 9-1-1 operators at the LAPD. I also passed the state's first ordinance regulating where convicted sex offenders were allowed to live. The ordinance prevented sex offenders from living near Pomona's schools and businesses or together in large group homes.
Ending the cycle of gang violence has also been a top priority. As mayor, I imposed gang injunctions limiting gang member activities. I have also been working with the community to increase police cooperation in crime-ridden neighborhoods.
Finally, I helped to restore firefighting positions in Pomona to ensure that fire shifts are fully staffed and firefighters are properly equipped to respond to fire and emergency calls.
California is facing a lot of challenges right now: budget cuts to our most needed social services, exorbitant gas prices, a crisis in public education, an economy short on good-paying jobs, and a health care system that's failing too many families.
I see the effects of those challenges on a daily basis. I have spent years working to remedy many of these issues at the local level. My experiences taught me that if you identify a problem, build a coalition, and work to solve it, there's no limit to what you can accomplish.
I'm ready to take that lesson to Sacramento. The 61st district should be represented by a problem-solver with close ties to the community and a real understanding of the challenges California's working families face every day. My experiences in public safety, local government and as a working mother of three make me uniquely qualified to understand, serve and represent our district in the state assembly.
I hope you will join me in my effort to work toward real solutions for working families. There is too much at stake to risk fighting the same old battles while nothing is solved. I had a dream to start my own commerce, but I did not earn enough amount of cash to do it. Thank goodness my close friend told to take the loan. Thus I received the college loan and realized my old dream.
