Western Municipal Water District board, Division 4: October 2008 Archives
My name is Don Galleano and I am running for re-election to the Western Municipal Water District Board of Directors, Division 4.
As a third generation grape grower and winemaker in Western Riverside County, I have a unique stake in protecting and enhancing our regional water resources. My interest in water management and community service dates back 30 years, beginning with my 23 years as a Director of the Jurupa Community Services District and most recently as your current Western Municipal Water District Director.
Water, or the lack of it, affects us all. Providing clean, reliable water while being proactive and creative in water re-use and conservation will ensure a strong economy and healthy environment for generations to come. Leaders are needed who understand the complexities of water stewardship and, most importantly, who will foster strong community alliances through trust and respect. I have earned support from leaders in Congress, the State Legislature, and local governments. Together we are successfully collaborating to manage the drought we are experiencing now.
In my first term on Western's Board, we have taken measures to expand our local water supply to make up for diminishing imports from the Colorado River and State Water Project. Among the $300 million in projects currently underway are: the Seven Oaks Dam, which captures up to 200,000 acre-feet of storm water that would otherwise run into the ocean; the Riverside-Corona Feeder, which will transfer wet year runoff to our area for use in dry years; and the Arlington and Chino Desalters which clean up ground water and provide millions of gallons of pure water.
Western has been at the forefront of water conservation efforts, with our award-winning garden providing a role model for water-efficient landscaping, and awarding millions of dollars of rebates to households for conservation efforts. In addition, Western has looked to the future, investing in our local students to keep them engaged in science, nurturing the next generation of leaders to prepare for Southern California's water needs.
As a result of Western's responsible leadership, our community has been blessed by having some of the best water in the State.
Thank you for your past support. With your vote, I will continue to build a bright future for our community as your Division 4 Director at Western Municipal Water District.
