Alvin Robinson vs. Kenny Florian, swing bout

Robinson (9-1) takes on Florian (8-3) in the lightweight class.

Both fighters go around the ring to start the match attacking and retreating. Florian scores a take down and stays on top forcing referee Yves Lavigne to seperate them. Florian again gets on top of Robinson and this time rains punches on top of Robinson. Robinson eventually works his way back to his feet but Florian keeps coming at him and gets another take down and is in better position. Florian throws punches that land and Lavigne calls a stop to the fight at the 4:30 mark of the first round.
Florian is now 9-3 while Robinson is now 9-2.

Middleweight title bout: Nate Marquardt vs. Anderson Silva

The main event of the night is for Silva's middleweight belt. Silva comes in at 15-4 while Marquardt is 28-6-1.

After dancing around each other for 50 seconds, Marquardt goes in with some punches. Silva goes for flying kick that was caught by Marquardt, who took Silva down. Silva almost breaks free with a submission as well, but Marquardt backs out to find a new angle. McCarthy stands the fighters up with more than a minute remaining. Silva is able to get a takedown. Marquardt begins to fight free, but that only gives Silva a better means for attack and after taking Marquardt down, Silva is able to land repeated blows to the head making McCarthy stop the fight at the 4:50 mark in the first round.
Silva retains his belt and improves to 16-4 while Marquardt falls to 28-7-1.

Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz

Evans comes in a perfect 15-0 against Ortiz at 16-5 in the light heavyweight division.

Ortiz gets the early take down and has Evans against the fence. However not much happens as Evans gets back to his feet after a minute and both fighters get neutral. A series of punches are thrown but not many do any damage as Evans is against the fence again but the fighters are soon seperated as Evans mouth piece falls out and it needs to be cleaned. Both fighters get in the middle of the ring dancing with each other. Ortiz gets Evans again against the fense but this time Evans fights out of it. However, Ortiz soon powers his way back in control while standing up and stays that way as the round ends.
Both fighters are looking for their moment, dancing around the ring. Evans goes for a shoot take down but Ortiz powers out of it. Ortiz has Evans backing up around the ring but Evans gets Ortiz against the fence and is going for a take down but Ortiz won't budge as he breaks free with almost three minutes gone by. Evans again goes for a shoot take down but can't take him down, however Ortiz is now bleeding under his right eye. Ortiz scores a take down with more than a minute remaining. Evans reverses and scores a take down but exposes his head and Ortiz locks in a guillotine choke that Evans rides out as the round ends.
Ortiz shoots in on Evans left leg a minute into the round and scores another take down on Evans who is against the fense. Evans almost breaks free but Ortiz will not let go and has control of Evans' right leg while both fighters are standing. Referee John McCarthey seperates teh fighters with less than two minutes to go. Ortiz has Evans backing up. But with a minute remaining, Evans starts to throw punches and Ortiz has to go for a take down. Evans defeneds the takedown for as long as he can and with 10 seconds remaining gets the takedown by slamming Ortiz down. The round and fight ends moments later.
Ortiz is a popular fighter in Las Vegas, however in Sacramento, this is not the case. The decison is a unanimous draw, 28-28. A point was taken away from Ortiz during the fight for grabbing the fence.
Ortiz is now 16-5-1, while Evans is 15-0-1.

Lightweight title bout: Hermes Franca vs. Sean Sherk

Franca (18-5) fights for Sherk's (35-2-1) belt in this five round match.

Franca comes out with a flying knee and goes for a guillotine choke. Sherk picks him up and runs, him to the fence, then drops him, but Franca still has the choke on. It takes Sherk almost a minute to get free and work his top advantage with Franca on his back. Sherk is in control but can do much damge to Franca, who can't break free. Franca finally gets some freedom, but it is quickly taken away from him and Sherk stays on top as the round ends.
Sherk attempts to shoot Franca to start the round but is met with a strong knee that sends him back. Franca pounds but Sherk withstands the attack and gets on top. Franca is almost able to free himself, but Sherk will not let him go and blankets Franca. Franca gets a little freedom with 50 seconds left in the round and applies another guillotine choke, but it is not on well enough to cause any concern as the second round ends.
This round starts a little slower than the previous two rounds, but it doesn't take to long before Sherk gets a take down by picking up Franca and slamming him against the ground. Sherk stays on top of Franca and pounding him in the head and body, nothing devistating, but it does show control. Franca is almost able to free himself with more than a minute remaining, but Sherk again keeps him down. Sherk almost bends Franca's arm in a submission move, but Franca is able to get it back as the third round ends.
Franca catches Sherk again with a knee but Sherk shakes it off and get on top. Franca does get free but Sherk stays on top of Franca and picks him up and slams him back onto the mat. Franca gets free with 1:50 left and both fighters lock up 20 seconds later and again Franca gets taken down. Sherk stays on top as the round ends.
The final round begins with the usual Sherk taked down. Franca gets almost gets free but can't and is now bleeding from his nose. Franca is doing his best to get free and trying to get any type of submission hold in the process, but Sherk is too strong to allow Franca anything as the match ends with Sherk on top, as usual.
Sherk retains his belt with a unanimous decision: 50-45, 50-45, 49-46. Sherk improves to 36-2-1 while Franca is now 18-6.

Heath Herring vs. Minotauro Nogueira

The PPV begins with Herring (27-12-1) takes on Nogueira (29-4-1) in a heavyweight bout. Nogueira makes his UFC debut and is 2-0 over Herring.

Nogueira starts with a take down but can't do much early as Herring has it well defended. Herring escapes after almost a minute and both fighters are in the neutral standing position. Nogueira is stalking Herring around the ring. Nogueira is able to land a punch that knocks Herring back at 2:10 left but is able to get enough distance to recover. Herring is cut over his left ey and Nogueira is still coming after him, as he should when a fighter sees. Herring then lands a left kick that floors Nogueira with less than 30 seconds left. Herring pounces and pounds but can't get good shots and steps away, but Nogueira does not get up until being instructed by the offical. Herring gets another take down and steps away and again Nogueira does not want to get up as the first round ends.
Nogueira seems to have recovered well as the second round begins, but both fighters are going back to stalking each other. Herring gets taken down as he goes for a kick more than two minutes into the round. Nogueira is going for a rear naked choke but can not get it locked. Herring, meanwhile, rolls our and gains the advantage, steps away forcing Nogueira up. Both fighters resume their usual cat and mouse, with Nogueira walking after Herring. Nogueira gains a take down with 10 seconds left and that is how the round ends.
For almost a minute both fighters walk around the ring before Nogueira is able to score a take down. Nogueira is trying to set up a submissionand at 3:30 is going for a rear naked choke. But 30 seconds later Herring is able to roll free and gain an advatage. Herring can't do much and Nogueira then rolls free and before Herring can stand up, Nogueira get on top. With just under two minutes Herring get free and both fighters are at the neutral position. Herring is trying to score a kick but is blocked each time and both fighters can't do much as the fight ends.
Nogueira scores a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three cards, to improved to 30-4-1. Herring falls to 27-13-1

Mike Nickels vs. Stephan Bonnar

Bonnar (12-3) returns from his drug suspension to take on Nickels (5-1).

Bonnar charges but Nickels does not seem intimidated at all. Nickels gets the first take down however Bonnar wiggels free to gain a position advantage. Bonnar almost locks in a rear naked choke but Nickels gets free. But Bonner is relentless and finally locks in the rear naked choke causing Nickels to tapout at 2:14 into the first round.
Bonnar is now 13-3 while Nickels falls to 5-2.

Diego Saraiva vs. Jorge Gurgel

Saraiva (9-4-1) takes on Gurgel (13-2) in the lightweight division.

About 45 secods into the fight, both fighters lock up and swing wildly at each other but neither fighters can gain an advantage. the fight progresses the same way over the next two minutes before Gurgel gains a takedown. Gurgel is trying to find and opening but Saraiva is able to defend from his back. Gurgel then tries to hover over and rain punches, but again is blocked. With 10 seconds remaining in the round, Gurgel allows Saraiva up and both fighters swing away until the horn sounds.
The second round begins the same way the first round did, with both fighters moving throwing a strike, then backing off. Gurgel appears to be in contol of the match by getting in and landing blows more. But as soon as it appears that way, Saraiva and Gurgel exchange blows for more than 10 seconds with Sariava looking to get the better of the exchange and forcing Gurgel to lock up. Saraiva then leaps onto Gurgel who drops him on his back.
Both fights get back to neutral as the round ends.
No surprise that the third round begins like the last two, with each fighter looking for their spot. Saraiva shoots in but is blocked by Gurgel and is again forced to defend himself on his back. Not much happens after that. Gurgel allows Saraiva up with 20 seconds left in the fight. Both fighters are tired as the match ends as there is no flurry at the end.
Gurgel gets the unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three cards, and improves to 14-2. Saraiva falls to 9-5-1.

Jason Gilliam vs. Chris Lytle

Welterweights Gilliam (9-1) takes on Lytle (22-14-5). Gilliam is a late fill in for Drew Fickett.

Both fighters come out fast but Lytle gains the early advantage getting on top and landing strikes to the ribs. Gilliam is able to roll out but Lytle is relentless by almost securing an ankle lock. Gilliam gets his ankle back but Lytle gets an arm bar and triangle leg lock choke. Gilliam is forced to tap out at 2:15 into the first round.
Lytle improves to 23-14-5 while Gilliam is 9-2.

Mark Bocek vs. Frankie Edgar

The first match of the night has Bocek (4-0) against Edgar (6-0) in a lightweight bout.

Both fighters lock up early. Edgar lands a right that knocks Bocek down for a moment. About 30 seconds later Bocek returns the favor and floors Edgar. The match quickly becomes a boxing match and Edgar dominated Bocek forcing Bocek to lock up with Edgar on top. Chants of USA break out for Bocek who is from New Jersey against the Canadian Bocek. Both fighters get back to the neutral standing position before Bocek shoots in for a take down. Edgar is able to withstand the attack and gets on top and in the closing moments pounds Bocek until referee calls for the stoppage with 5 seconds left in the first round.
Edgar improves to 7-0 while Bocek gets his first loss in five matches.

UFC 73

Welcome to The Press-Telegram's round by round coverage of UFC 73 live from the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif.

There will be four dark matches before the pay-per-view begins at 7 p.m. The first dark fight features lightweights Mark Bocek takes on Frankie Edgar. Jason Gilliam and Chris Lytle will follow that match at the welterweight class. The last two matches before the pay-per-view will feature lightweights Diego Saraiva and Jorge Gurel followed by Mike Nickels and Stephan Bonnar in the light heavyweight class.
The pay-per-view will begin with heavyweights Heath Herring and Minotauro Nogueira. The swing bout of the night is a light heavyweight battle between Alvin Robinson and Kenny Florian. The first title on the line will be the lightweight belt featuring defending champion Sean Sherk and challenger Hermes Franca. Fan favorite Tito Ortiz will take on Rashad Evans in a light heavyweight bout. The main event of the evening will be middleweight champion Anderson Silva versus Nate Marquardt.
Non-title fights will go a maximum of three rounds while title bouts go five.
Action will begin shortly.
