Jason Gore qualifies for U.S. Open

Jason Gore (Hart, Peppderdine) will play in the U.S. Open again for the first time since 2005, when he was the darling of Pinehurst. Gore qualified with a 67-73--140 at Lake Merced on Monday. Here is the press release:

DALY CITY - Jason Gore has booked his return to the U.S. Open.

The 34-year-old Southern California native will be making his first appearance in America's national championship since his storied run at Pinehurst in 2005 (where he led after two rounds and played in the last group in the final round). After turning in a bogey-free, five-under-par 67 in the morning round of the 36-hole qualifying, Gore coasted to a second-round 73 for a 140 total and co-medalist honors.

"It's pretty big," Gore said regarding qualifying. "It's kind of like it was three years ago. I was playing poorly, got to sectional and figured some things out. Being a California boy, playing at Torrey, it's going to be fun. I've been dreaming about this since they announced it." This will be Gore's third U.S. Open after first cracking the field in 1998 at the Olympic Club.

The 86-player field (55 professionals, 31 amateurs) was competing for seven spots in the Open field, to be contested next week at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California. Held at 6,863-yard Lake Merced Golf and Country Club in San Francisco, qualifiers faced cold and windy conditions most of the day.

Other qualifiers include co-medalist John Ellis of San Jose, a member of the Canadian Tour, co-medalist Michael Allen, a 49-year-old San Mateo native and PGA Tour member, amateur Jordan Cox (above), a member of the national runner-up Stanford University Golf Team, who is making his first trip to the Open, Garrett Chaussard, a University of Illinois alum and member of the Gateway Tour, Jeff Wilson of Fairfield (left), a career amateur who played in the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and Craig Barlow of Henderson, NV and the PGA Tour. Chaussard, Cox, Barlow and Wilson all finished one shot out of a tie for first, all firing a two-round, one-under-par score of 141.
After a one-hole playoff, J.T. Kohut of Stockton earned first-alternate status. Jeff Brehaut of Los Altos is second alternate.
