Lefty in the lead

Phil Mickelson chipped in from 35 feet above the hole on the 18th at Riviera to maintain his one-shot lead today in the first round of the Northern Trust Open. He bogeyed the 16th, but otherwise was near flawless in his 5-under 66. He loves Riviera, and Riviera loves him. J.B. Holmes and Hunter Mahan are tied for second, one shot back.

Lefty in the lead

Phil Mickelson has taken his customary place atop the leaderboard at the Northern Trust Open. He birdied the 13th and J.B. Holes bogeyed the fifth, so Mickelson now has the outright lead. Mickelson started in the afternoon and might run out of daylight as to whether he can get in all 18. He’s at 5-under through 13 holes.

Cantlay has worst outing in pro event

Patrick Cantlay finished at 7-over 78 at Riviera today, his worst outing as an amateur in a pro event. He teed off in the morning, and the wind was so bad PGA Tour officials decided not to send standard bearers out with each group in the afternoon.
Of the wind, Cantlay said: “It was a factor for all of us, so I guess it was a non-factor.”

No rain? Reallllllly?

It’s raining today during the pro-am at Riviera Country Club, but the forecast through tomorrow’s first round and Sunday’s final round doesn’t call for any rain.
Huh?
Don’t believe it. it ALWAYS rains during tournament week here. It’s as predictable as traffic on the 405.
