Members of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association's Concerned Neighbors of Buckley School Committee have filed a lawsuit against the Buckley School and the city of Los Angeles, according to the most recent SOHA newsletter.

Ellen Vukovich, who oversees the organization's land-use committees, said this is not the route the neighborhood wanted to take. However, since Councilman Jack Weiss "would not protect the neighborhood and completely sided with the school, there was no other choice," the newsletter stated.

The school made an offer that did not address most of the issues discussed for the past two years, such as shorter construction time and no working on Saturdays, according to the newsletter.

In addition, the neighbors filed an appeal concerning the terms of the city's conditional-use permit, which was approved by the City Council. The appeal is scheduled to be heard Sept. 9.

"We unite with the neighbors in being very disappointed by Jack Weiss' lack of support for the residents of Sherman Oaks," the SOHA newsletter states.

L.A. Councilmember Wendy Greuel recently told the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association that she plans to expedite the installation of speed humps in the Library Square neighborhood of the community, according to the association's latest newsletter.

Speed humps and permanent bumpouts will be funded from a voluntary contribution by the developer of Best Buy, located west of the neighborhood, into the Library Square Traffic Mitigation Fund.

The association added it's waiting for a bid from the city contractor on the cost of bumpouts along Moorpark Street, as the engineering process has now been completed.

Julie Rajan, executive director of the California Clean Money Campaign, and Trent Lange, the organization's president, will speak at the next meeting of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Associaiton at 7:15 p.m. June 18 in the Sunkist Building, 14130 Riverside Drive, Sherman Oaks.

They will discuss topics such as "Would Clean Money Campaign rules change L.A. City Hall?" and "Is this the one reform that makes all other reforms possible?"

Also to be discussed will be issues such as should the city subsidize campaigns to keep special interests from controlling elected officials, will it reduce the powerful developers and unions and will be the best candidates be elected?

"We have learned that the location of the former Barone's restaurant, billiard parlor, etc. - from Ventura Boulevard to Moorpark Street - is for sale. The asking price is $23 million, including entitlements to build 88 condominium units and 16,500 square feet of retail space."

L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky will speak about transportation, city development and neighborhood protection at the next meeting of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow in the Sunkist Building, 14130 Riverside Drive, Sherman Oaks.

He was one of the main proponents of the highly successful Orange rapid transit system that finally brought a transit line to the Valley.

He also has been critical of the city's plans to encourage massive developments that will make existing traffic problems even worse.

Rita Robinson , the new general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, will speak about traffic problems in the city at the next community meeting of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association.

The meeting will be held at 7:15 p.m. On Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Sunkist Building, located at 14130 Riverside Drive, Sherman Oaks.

With a booming population, traffic has increased at a dramatic rate and local streets are becoming clogged.

Robinson is in charge of traffic solutions that are being considered – and implemented – both short-term and long-term.

The last manager was fired by Mayor Villaraigosa because of delayed progress, clearly indicating how important the job is.

You can explain to Robinson some traffic problems you've encountered in Sherman Oaks. What are your ideas for traffic relief, such as one-way streets. What steps should the Department of Transportation take to protect residential neighborhoods from becoming “cut-through highways?”

Please note that this meeting is on the 2nd Wednesday of Novemeber, not the 3rd Wednesday like other dates.

Airport Noise Committee Chair Wayne Williams reports that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has appointed three new resident-friendly members to the Van Nuys Airport Citizens Advisory Council (VNY CAC). VNY CAC is almost exclusively pro-aviation and has been successful at moving the frustation of residents away from public officials.

By replacing pro-aviation members with new individuals, Villaraigosa is supporting crowded communities that are affected by aviation noise in the valley. Williams, a member of the VNY CAC and appointed by City Councilmember Jack Weiss, thanked Villaraigosa for his awareness and action supporting the residents. Williams hopes to soon have anti-noise supporters appointed to the advisory council by L.A. Councilmembers Wendy Greuel, Richard Alarcon, and Dennis Zine. This would bring balance to the VNY CAC.

Claims of less traffic have been made for the Library Square neighborhood, near the new Best Buy on Van Nuys Boulevard. Pat Davenport, field deputy for Councilmember Wendy Greuel, reports that the requests on how to reduce traffic have been honored. Signs forbidding trucks more than 6,000 gross weight will take effect at the intersection of Milbank and Sylmar soon, as well as in Milbank Street and Hazeltine Avenue.

Other issues to be considered include delivery trucks cutting through residential neighborhoods, not including resident deliveries. Davenport also reports that the city's department of street services is installing new bumpouts, or curb extentions, along Moorpark Street. These bumpouts are being paid for with $175,000 contributed by Best Buy.
