Kings sign prospect
The Kings today signed forward Teddy Purcell, out of the University of Maine, to an entry-level contract. Purcell, 21, had 16 goals and 27 assists in 40 games as a freshman this season and ranked third on his team in both categories.

Rich Hammond has covered the Kings, on a full-time or part-time basis, since the 2000-01 season. He was the beat writer for the entire John Torchetti era and has witnessed Bob Miller singing country music in a Nashville honky-tonk bar. A native of Los Angeles, Rich has worked at the Daily News since 1999 and also serves as the paper's deputy sports editor. E-mail Rich at

According to the Bangor Daily News, the Kings were one of at least teams pursuing Purcell. It was the fact that the Kings went all out (even traveling to Newfoundland) that Purcell signed with them. Any info on his level of talent for the NHL? He was evidently Inside College Hockey's Rookie of the Year.
