Cammalleri files

Michael Cammalleri has elected to file for arbitration, to no surprise. The Kings have until tomorrow afternoon to seek arbitration when it comes to Richard Petiot and John Zeiler.

Have the others signed?

Cammalleri, LaBarbera, Petiot and Zeiler were the only arbitration-eligible players heading into the summer.

Does getting an amount in arbitration mean that, if the Kings keep him, they have to sign him to a 1-year deal at that salary, or can they work out a long-term deal around that salary?

Can Cammalleri still accept offer sheets from other clubs?

Mike said:

Rich, how confident are you that the Kings will have him re-signed before arbitration. Both DL and RH seemed like they didn't want to go through it. Also, are the Kings vulnerable to an offer sheet at this point?

Rich Hammond said:

If Cammalleri actually goes to arbitration, and the Kings accept the figure, it's only for one year. He cannot, as I understand it, accept offer sheets now.

I'm sure that the Kings would like to avoid arbitration, but what I'm not certain of is how this recent free-agent madness would impact their ability to get a long-term deal done. I'm just not certain.

DH just resigned with the Red Wings. that oughta end those nasty rumors. I bet his agent probably had something to do with that---he only got a 2 mil

Rich,

Can you contact Dean Lombardi and ask him to lock up Cammy before arbitration? The Vanek deal done messed EVERYTHING THE HELL UP!

Rich, can you play devil's advocate for a moment? Where does Cammy fit salary wise into the NHL pay structure considering his age (25), years in the league (3?) and last season's points (80)??? Is he a $3 mil or $4 mil a yr player? $5 mil? Frolov is signed for the next 3 seasons at $3 mil, $3.5 mil and $4 mil. That might be a yardstick for the KIngs with them bumping Cammy's price because of better goals/assets.

That said, who is Cammy comparable to elsewhere in the NHL? That meaning, as both the Kings and Cammy's agent haggle over price, each will scan the NHL landscape and pick out other similar players to Cammy and use their pay to judge Cammy's worth.

Thoughts??? The Kings DO intend to re-sign Cammy, right???

I'll take a stab at being GM. I'm not a big Cammy lover as I feel he lacks on the defensive side. I can't recall too many times where I saw him strip a guy of a puck or take a body in the D-zone. I don't mean deliver a crushing check just generally being a pest and recovering a puck in the D-end which is what you have to do as an NHL center.

Now maybe someday he'll be a Ray Whitney ($3.5), Mark Rechi ($2.0) or Martin St. Louis ($5.25)type so you could look at them as the potential given his size and the style he needs to play.

Looking at guys closer to Cammy's age like Cheecho and Afinogenov they're making $3.5 and Cheecho had a fantastic year in 05-06.

So I say Cammy is a $3.5 or $3.75 mil guy giving him credit for achieving what he has on a sub-par team. I could live with a 3 year contract seeing that number get up to $4.25 in the final year.
