Some housekeeping
A couple things that I don't want to slip through the cracks:
-- As already noted in comments here, Russian publications are reporting that Oleg Tverdovsky has signed to play in Russia. One publication said it was a five-year contract. Of course, that's the same publication that, in a previous story, referred to Oleg's current team as the ``Los Angeles Clippers.'' So...yeah. I asked Lombardi about this at the end of the Cammalleri conference call, and today I'm waiting to see if I'll receive official word about this. If it's true (and I believe it is, or at least will be), it will save the Kings $2.5 million next season.
-- Mike Weaver has signed a two-way, one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
-- Jamie Lundmark has signed a one-year deal to play in Russia. This actually happened a couple weeks ago when I was on vacation, so I wasn't around to see if it made news then or not!
-- And to answer a question I saw in the comments, yes, the Kings can negotiate an extension with Cammalleri starting next July 1. It's the same situation as with Visnovsky this summer.

Jill Painter joined the Daily News in 2000 and during the last eight years she's covered the Dodgers, Cal State Northridge, UCLA, Kings, golf and everything in between. Even though she's from Colorado, she still freezes in the Staples Center press box but always manages to thaw her fingers in time to make deadline. E-mail Jill at

I'm really happy about these transactions. Obviously, Tverdovsky didn't fit into the team's plans, so to rid themselves of the salary is a nice bonus. Weaver is a solid citizen, and I hope he gets a chance to be a #6/7 guy in Pittsburgh. He certainly has the smarts and the footspeed to be a serviceable guy on that team. Lundmark... well, I was pretty positive about him when he arrived, but yikes! two assists in 29 games at the center position? Please... you can make every excuse in the world, but that's an amazing lack of production.
Considering where this guy was drafted, and the high expectations placed upon him, you would have to say "Bust" now that he's blown through 4 organizations.
Brady Murray will probably take Lundmark spot on the 4th line. Hopefully the Kings get rid of Willsie, and the 4th line is made up of Zeiler, Murray, Thornton and Ivanans.
Hey Rich,
Because of Oleg's signing elsewhere (if it is even true) the Kings will save 2.5 million dollars in cap room. Is that money that the Kings did not anticipate being there already, or did they just score 2.5 million dollars worth of extra room...to possibly pick up a filler or somebody? 2.5 can buy quite a lot, and in my opinion, it seems that the Kings are missing a right winger on the 1st or second line. Do you think Brownie will be ready for the number 1 line? or do you think they should shop for a RW up there...yeah..I know that the Kings do not really have many more options this late in the free agency, but what do you think? Is there anyone good left in the free agency (restricted or unrestricted)? Do the Kings have cap room?
Thank you for your response in advance...BTW...
You're Awesome...
You're Kind of a big deal...people know you.
Thanks,
Kyle
Oleg enjoy the home cooked Borscht
Again excellent reporting on some of the key items Kings fans are interested in. How long tell they start selling ad space on your blog spot? i can only imagine the page hit increase the last few days.....
Rich posted his line-ups awhile back, I think the first line will def have Kopitar and either Brown, Cammy, or Calder and the second line Handzus, Nagy ,and possibly Frolov.
I think the Kings are set at both wings since Cammy, O'Sullivan, Calder are all versatile and can play wing or center.
Hey Rich,
Thanks for the Lundmark info. Did you know the kings signed Nagy, Handzus, Calder, Preissing & Stuart? ;p
Darn vacation. Just giving you a hard time.
You are doing a fantastic job. Keep up the good work.

Rich-
Besides hiring you as our personal Kings reporter, what can we do do make sure you continue to cover the Kings?
Will writing to your editor help?
If so, what is his/her address?
FJ
Rich,
Can you ask DL for an approximate cap number right now giving where the Kings currently stand?
Do you think DL will try and sign Brown and O'Sullivan to contract extensions as the season goes? Or is the 2.5 going towards extentions for Brown and O'Sullivan?
Darren...the $2.5M won't impact any potential extensions. The $2.5M is simply for this season only and those guys are already locked up for this season.
As for Brown and O'Sullivan, we'll see how the season goes. It would seem to be in the best interests of both the players and the Kings to wait a while and see what type of seasons they have before they start to talk money.
Mike,
The info is readily available on the web:
http://www.nhlnumbers.com/lak.html
Well, at least a decent estimate. With Oleg out, and making a few assumptions based on that site's numbers, we're at an estimated 44.8M (leaving roughly 5.5M open).
Don't go by nhlnumbers.com ... they have some wrong info and $#'s
Use NHLSCAP.COM, that's Irish Blue's site from Hockey's Future and he gets his #'s right from Dean Lombardi himself so we know they're 100% correct.
As for were the Kings sit Salary Cap wise ...

Can he take Cloutievsky with him???
If the Kings do indeed have 2-4 mil under the cap, how about renting a goalie for a year? Belfour? Cujo? The name of the game is hold the fort until Bernier is ready.
