Armstrong interview
Here's the transcript of the group interview done this afternoon by Derek Armstrong...
Q: With the new faces, does that make it tougher in training camp?
A: It's a little tougher. You've got to try to get some chemistry and get used to the people in the dressing room. There's louder people and quieter people and you have to see how people get motivated differently. But it's a good experience. We go on a long road trip here at the beginning of training camp, and by the end of it I think the chemistry will be great.
Q: What do you think about the trip to London?
A: It's going to be a good experience. People ask if we're going to enjoy much of it, but you know, it's business. We had the summertime to enjoy ourselves and get back in shape. We're going there to win two hockey games. We're going there to sell hockey a little bit, but our goal is to win two games and give ourselves a great start this year.
Q: You're going to be playing the Ducks. Is there some pressure on the Kings to have a successful season after they won the Cup?
A: There's always pressure to win. That's why we play sports, as individuals and as a team. We're all competitive people. All of us in the dressing room and everyone in the organization, we were all disappointed with last year, but to take the positive of that, a lot of young guys got a lot of experience in different situations last year. So we definitely grew as a team last year. The win column might not have said it, but we did grow as a team and we got a lot of experience for the young guys, so we're excited. That's great for Southern California hockey, that the Ducks win, but now we're going to try to take it from them.
Q: Goaltending is obviously an issue. Do the players look at that going into camp?
A: Well, it's obviously a big issue in any organization. We have confidence in our goalies. We know our goaltending wasn't as good as it should have been last year, and neither was our penalty killing. There's lots of areas that could have been a lot better. We can't point fingers, and we just have to be confident in them. All the goalies here worked hard to get themselves in great shape. We're not worried about it. We're going in as a positive team and we've got to be a better team defensively. There were a lot of games last year where we hung the goalies out to dry and they had to make some big saves. I think if we're better defensively, our goaltending will be as good as there is in the league.
Q: With all the offseason acquisitions, it looks like you might be in a different role this season...
A: Whatever role they want to put me in, I'm here to help the team win games. I know there are a lot of great young scorers out there. If I have to take a step back or a step forward, it doesn't bother me one bit. Like any guy on our team, an older guy or a younger guy, we're here to win some games. ... Whatever role you're put into, I think it's going to be important that everyone accepts their role this year. Whether you were playing 20 minutes last year and you're playing three minutes this year, if that's your role, that's what you're going to have to accept. We're going to have to win some hockey games.
Army sounds like he's working toward being the captain of this team. He gave some great responses to some of those questions and seems like he is poised to be a leader on this team.
I really think that Army will be our next captain. I think this is Blakies last season and he might not want that big of a responsability that comes with being captain. What do you guys think? Keep up the great work Rich!
This is why Army should get the C.
Great Interview!!! For all the people out there that want Cammy for captian. He needs to take some notes from Army.
This interview has CAPITAN writen all over it.
Sorry guys, besides being charismatic I just don't see whats so great about Armstrong. He can't hold on to the puck, can't shoot that well and not much in speed. Maybe I'm missing something.
Army is a quality guy both on and off the ice. I have met him a couple of times and he really appreciate that you are coming all the way from Norway to see the kings and he remembers me and ask how I am. Army is the right man to be the kings next captain, he leads by example and he takes his role on the team serious and without hesitation. He is doing what it takes to make the kings win either he plays 10 or 20 min pr.game.
army is more of a leader then anyone i've heard talk. A true champion right there.
A good interview by Army. He does say all of the right things, but to say he should be captain is a stretch. He will not have the minutes on the ice like he did last year. Not only does a captain need to be good at interviews and promote the team first attitude but he should also be one of your leading ice time players so that he has a good possibility of being on the ice when something happens that requires the team captain to be involved. He will definitely get an "A" this year.
Army is a mediocre player skill-wise but he is a quality guy.
