Cammalleri at training camp

No video today, but I jumped in when a couple of the other reporters talked to Mike Cammalleri today. Since I had previously been the only local reporter to talk to him, I was curious to see what he would say when the arbitration question inevitably came up.

``It was what it was,'' Cammalleri said. ``I knew what I was getting into, going into it. It's not going to change the way I play the game at all.''

I have to say, Mike came off much better talking about it this time. I don't say that to either defend or criticize him, but I think he did a much better job of giving a short statement and moving on. He handled it well.

I asked him about training camp, and how easy it would be for everyone to come together in such a short time.

``That gelling effect doesn't really happen until the exhibition games anyway,'' Cammalleri said. ``When we get in the hotels and on the plane, we'll have that bonding experience. I talk a lot so with 12 hours on the plane I'm sure I'll get to know guys.''

Finally, I asked Cammalleri about the possibility of wearing an ``A'' on his jersey this season, something that seems increasingly likely if you listen to the buzz around training camp.

``It would mean a lot,'' Cammalleri said. ``It's a responsibility that I would like to have, whether it's now or later. I would like to be able to contribute in that leadership role. It's something I've been able to do on other teams and in other leagues.''

Great job Rich once again. It been a while since I posted (but have read intently) so I guess this is a question for you. Do you think the arbitration ordeal will effect Cammalleri's decision to stay once his new contract is up since he seems pretty down about how things went?

Rich, excellent material as always. I'm feeling much more encouraged about Cammy and the upcoming season. Following the arbitration award, I was very concerned about his state of mind and how that might translate onto the ice. But it seems that he's clearly ready to move on and step it up this year. I would really like to see him wearing the "A" this season. It would show that the coaching staff has great confidence in him and would also give Cammy an opportunity to demonstrate that he's prepared to take on a big leadership role and be held accountable for the team's performance. I really believe he's up for the challenge. Thanks again, Rich!

Rich,

Any interview with Visnovsky a possibility?

I'd be surprised if Cammy don't get an A this season. I've seen him show leadership since the 05-06 season.
The arbitration will only build up his game to a point that the organization will have no choice but to give him his asking price come end of contract. Wishful thinking right? Not with how DL's turning out to be.

Great example of how a great reporter makes a guy look good. I hope matt is taking notes on how to make these guys look good. that is the only way we are all going to grow the sport in So Cal.
