Crawford 9/25 postgame

Here are the quotes from Marc Crawford. The reporters are a bit difficult to understand on the recording, but I believe I did a decent job of picking up their questions. Here goes...

(Impressions of the game...)

We needed a great performance from Anze Kopitar to withstand them. We didn't panic in the end. I thought our third period was actually very good. We had great puck control in the third period and we forced them to try to take the puck from us. Most of the game we were chasing them. So we're very pleased to escape and come out with a win. A very good compliment to Salzburg. They played extremely good tonight and this game had a little bit of everything. Lots of power-play goals, lots of skating, a penalty-shot goal, and we're happy that we got the victory and we'll play tomorrow night.

(Couldn't hear the question...something about the number of goals allowed, I believe)

We made some mistakes tonight in our coverage. We forced too often, when we really didn't need to force. On any ice surface, North American or European, you've got to make sure you keep your body positioned and you have to work to keep your body positioned. You have to have great habits, in and around the net, and we didn't tonight. When you don't, you're going to end up having a lot of difficult chances against, and tonight that happened to us. So, we'll learn from it and, as I said, we want to improve for tomorrow night.

(How much did you miss Handzus and Frolov?)

Those guys are hurt, so you deal with what you've got. Those guys have a pretty serious injury to a good player right now as well, so everybody deals with it. The players that we had tonight, as I said, I was pleased with the way they fought in the third period, the way that they controlled the puck. That was probably the best part of our game, with the exception of how Kopitar played.

(What did you think of Visnovsky and Nagy?)

They show a very good familiarity playing on the big ice surface. Their game is to create space and take advantage of it. Ladislav, I thought, did that a number of times. It looked to me like Lubo loves playing on the big ice surface. He has so much room and he has such a creative mind, you could really see it working tonight. Again, it's a game where it's a little more power and a little more positioning in the North American game, and he's learned that game well. He's a great player. We didn't see his best game tonight but he's still pretty good.

(Did any Salzburg player especially draw your attention?)

I thought they had a number of playrers that played very well. I thought Tjarqvist was very good for them on defense. Then up front they had a number of players who were skating. I thought Pinter(?), number 85, he was very good. Strong on the puck, very good skills, and they've got great speed. Their speed gave us a lot of challenges all night, and I think it's going to help us. We need to make sure that we're very aware about how to defend, when you're playing against a team with lots of speed and lots of skill. It was a good challenge for us tonight. Thankfully, we won, and as I said earlier, we need to be better tomorrow.

(Couldn't get the question exactly...something about whether the Kings will be a playoff team this year, I believe)

One thing that we need to know is that we're a team that's fighting to get respect in the National Hockey League. We're a young team. We're a team that has to keep battling to make sure we capture respect, and this is a good lesson for us tonight. You've got to make sure you're ready to battle and give every ounce of yourself if you're going to win, when you're a team with our talent level. We'll need to do that if we're going to make the playoffs.

How "serious" exactly is Handzus' injury? Because I don't remember seeing a particular incident where Handzus appeared injured in Las Vegas.

Silly Austrians ...

Don't they know they're supposed to ask about the goaltending issue?!
