The money end
If a team took Cloutier off waivers right now -- not going to happen -- the Kings would be free and clear of his $3.1 million. But, as we learned last season with LaBarbera, if they attempt to recall him and someone grabs him, the Kings would have to pay half his salary. Would a team with goaltending woes be willing to take a $1.55-million chance? Perhaps, so this situation could get even more interesting once the season gets going.

Hallelujah........Thank you God! Now for my end of the bargain. Stop being such a potty mouth and by my wife that diamond she has always wanted.
"if they attempt to recall him and someone grabs him, the Kings would have to pay half his salary."
Rich if this scenario presented itself, would the Kings be on the hook for the remainder of his contract or only 07/08?
But to be honest with you, this is a blessing for Cloutier. Less pressure to find it game. Good luck to him.
OK, so here are a couple scenarios... The Kings buyout Cloutier... They pay him $4.1 mil and the cap gets hit until 2010-2011 is about $1 mil. OR The Kings send him down... need him back (God Forbid) he doesn't pass through waivers, the pay half of his remaining salary which would then be the cap hit for the remainder of his contract ('08-'09). OR the Kings send him down for the rest of his contract, never try to call him back up, pay him his $6.2 and no cap hit.
I'm sure we all want the last one, but of course it's not our money (granted it's the money of the 41st richest man in the US, but nonetheless, it's not ours.) We'll see if the constant threat of injuries force the Kings hand or if they've already made a decision as to what will happen (buyout).
woooooooooooooooo!!!!
i say again...
woooooooooooooooo!!!!
there is a god!!!!
I'm by no means an expert, but I believe that if a team claimed him, they & the Kings would split this year's contract.
After that, the claiming team would be on the hook for any remaining years.
ALSO, I don't think the Kings HAVE to send him to the AHL.
The waivers move could just be "housecleaning" to see if any other team wants him. They could keep him on the NHL roster after he clears (I THINK).
And I agree that this is a good senario for Cloutier. Let him go down to the AHL, where he should be able to shine and get his game back, and then if he gets picked up, great.
If not, then we have an NHL ready goalie we can call up in 4 or 5 months if nobody else can handle the job.
I really see this as a win-win for the Kings and Cloutier.
The only losing part for the Kings is that if they send Cloutier down, we're left with a 19 year old and 2 journeymen.
The new color scheme here makes the text complete unreadable. Black text on a dark purple background is asinine. Please change it back or you will lose at least one (and I suspect many more) avid reader.
Let's face it. Everyone on the Kings - management, coaches and teammates - has lost confidence in Cloutier. This will be a clean break. He will never play in Los Angeles again. This is just the way things are done in sports. Management is eating crow today, but by next week, nobody will be thinking about the Cloutier debacle any more. All talk will be about Bernier and the future. Time to move on, folks.
Also a followup to my earlier comment: I think Lombardi deserves a pass on the Cloutier deal. Based on pretty much everything else we've seen so far of him, he is making most of the right moves to position the Kings franchise for a steady winning record in the future. I've been a Kings fan for 30+plus years, and I've never, ever seen so much young talent in the organization. To me, it seemed that signing Cloutier last season was a desperation move. With all the players now available (did you see all the talent that got sent down to Manchester? Wow!) I don't think Lombardi will be making any more Cloutier-type moves anytime soon.
Ragbone...I don't see where you're getting black on purple. I've been on three different computers and several browers and see nothing of the sort. Anyone else?
Guys,
F-Dub, we can't buy him out this season, the deadline for that passed. We would have to wait until next season to buy him out.
Paul, if a team claimed him on the way down, the Kings would not be on the hook for any of cloutier's salary or cap hit for either of his remaining years. If he was sent to the AHL, and then was called up to the NHL and THEN was claimed, then the Kings would be on the hook for 1/2 the cap hit and 1/2 his salary for the full remainder of his contract and not just for this season.
I've had the black on purple happen to me a few times (firefox on a mac), but a refresh of the page always cleared it right up.
Just wondering, if or probably when Cloutier clears waivers and is sent down to Manchester, will the Kings still pay his full 3.1 million or just a fraction of that? Will it go against the cap?
I see black type on white background, Mr. Hammond!
Cloutier would get paid in Manchester but it wouldn't go against the NHL cap unless he made it back up.
I like the new look on the site. I have the black text on white background in the middle with little purple bars on either side. What browser are you using Ragbone?
No black on purple here.
Same as it always has been.
This is crazy about Bernier. I am sure the Kings are taking every precaution. Most likely scenario will be 9 games and back to the Q. But what if this guy stands on his head and plays beyond any expectations you have to let him play.
If this was the Olympics and there was a kid that was better than anybody else at what ever sport in what ever position, the Kid would get the start.
No risk No reward.
lakings.com now has a picture of Bailey making a ridiculous pose on the ice. I don't have much to say about this other than I think it's kinda cool that Bernier has a picture of a lion wearing a Kings goalie mask on as his mask. Coincidence?

Oh no, they list Bailey's favorite songs as:The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Born to be Wild, Wild Thing. That means that every time he makes an appearance in a game we are going to hear one of these songs. Please God NO!
Rich could you please find out if that is there intention?
I've also got the purple screen of death a few times, but refreshing the home page always does the trick. This started happening yesterday if that helps any Rich.
Never seen any black and purple. Firefox on a Mac here also.
As for Cloutier, this seems like the best move possible for the Kings right now. Remains to be seen what this means for Quick, probably ECHL for another season?
no black and purple here.
