Wow. I'm really surprised to hear it's for six years. I'll be very interested to hear for how much.

6 years?! Wow, that's a commitment...so much for those trade rumors...

Great team win last night btw, I love watching quality play...)

I'll put the positive spin on this. It's good to see the Kings making a commitment to the younger talent on the roster. Sure is a change from years past.

Six Years!?!?!? Holy crap...well it's nice to know that some players actually want to play here in L.A.

This is great news. Hopefully this is a trend that other young Kings players will follow.

Also, I know Willsie is not our favorite player, but this is a great pic:

Great news. I wonder who will be next? Kopitar or O'Sully.

The new NHL has been handing out these long term deals to young players all over the place. Brown had the potential to be a very young UFA & with Cammy most likely defecting for big bucks in a couple of years, this is a good move.

I sure hope that we sign Cami to same later this year! He's working his butt off & it's paying off in goals. If he bitter about the arbatration in the summer it sure isn't showing thru. He wants to be the team leader!
I was blasting Blake the last few weeks so let me be the first to say he's picked it too, as all the D have. Great job boys! And those drummers have been gone too :)

Good news indeed. My guess is that this is the first of several lock-ups, Cammi included. Dean will take these one step/player at a time. Look closely at Brown's annual pay figures, and I'll bet Rich and Matt will be able to figure out cap issues and moolah available to lock up the other key pieces over this season and next, including Cammi.

Rich and Matt can you ask Dean how many 6 year contracts he's ever given out before and the names of the players so that we could see how those deals panned out? I agree it's great to lock up young players, but a LOT of things happen in 6 years. 6 seasons ago Gary Galley and Don Audette were Kings along with Bob Corkum. Stephane Fiset and Jamie Storr split the goaltending duties.

Is there a negative one here? Tying up a young player who has tons of potential long term doesn't have many downsides. We'll have to see what the dollar amounts are, but do you think there are tons of questions around Brown? The only outside one I can think of is that his style of game can lead to injuries, but so far he doesn't look fragile.

He appears at worst to be blossoming into a consistant 20-25 goal guy who hits everything that moves and can compliment skill guys on a line with him. Like Dallas Drake only with 10 more goals per season. Most teams would be rather happy with that kind of player, and at 22, I can't see many GMs out there who wouldn't love to sign this guy long term assuming the dollar amount wasn't ridiculous.

"...a LOT of things happen in 6 years. 6 seasons ago Gary Galley and Don Audette were Kings along with Bob Corkum. Stephane Fiset and Jamie Storr split the goaltending duties."

Love the idea of seeing who else DL has signed long term and how that turned out, but there is no comparison between the guys you mention and Brown (at least in the way you draw the comparison here).

You actually have to go back 8 years to see the guys you mention on our roster, and none of them except Storr was under 30 (and Galley and Corkum were like 36). Brown is 22.

At the same time there was a guy who we moved to the Islanders named Jokinen who was 21 and like Brown was just starting to show he could play in a regular spot and produce. I'm cherry picking with hindsight there, but anyone think you'd have been unhappy locking up a 22 year old Jokinen for 6 years?

Questioner said:

"A consistant [sic] 20-25 goal scorer"? He's never scored more than 17.

As for the 6, that roster is from 6 full seasons ago. Look it up. There was a strike in there. 6 years is a LONG time. It's a risk.

Jeff said:

6 full seasons ago was 00-01: galley and audette were no longer on the Kings and corkum was 33 years old. And Fiset played all of 7 games. Look it up: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0000402001.html

dbushik said:

Um...I did look it up, and like Jeff points out, you have to go back further to get the roster you're talking about Q.

Yes, six years is a long time. Who said it wasn't? Just turns out it's a lot longer for a guy in his thirties than a guy in his early twenties. Certainly my person experience...

You aren't arguing the guys you mention to demonstrate how long six years is were in points in their careers nothing even remotely like where Brown is though, right? Are you honestly saying signning a 22yo Brown is even in the same ball-park of risk as the guys you're talking about?

I'll stand by saying it's my belief almost any GM in the league would be willing to take that risk.

And Brown is on pace for 30 goals this season. Certainly early to be projecting for the entire year, but considering his consistant improvement every year so far, you think it's a stretch to say this guy is going to be a regular low 20's goal scorer? And btw, I used the words "appears" and "blossoming into" in my description. So yeah, he's never broken 17. Where does that not fit in with what I said?

I'm being optomistic, but not ridiculously or unreasonably so. I do however think you are overstating the downside here by a great degree.
