Trade rumors
Crawford denied rumors printed in the Ottawa Sun that the Kings are trying to shop young forwards Dustin Brown and Alexander Frolov for a goalie.
``There's no basis to that,'' Crawford said. ``Everybody, reporters and probably coaches alike, try to fantasize about trades. They are exactly that -- fantasies. That trade would never happen. Ever. It's a fabrication by somebody saying, `Hey, that might work. They need a goalie, and who can we get that's young and inexpensive?' They'll look at the salary chart and say that makes sense, but it really doesn't.''
``We're not going to do anything with our good, young players. And we're going to continue to try to get the goalies we got to improve their games. Jason has played two pretty good games, although one just for a period. But we got something to build on there.''
I'll have more quotes from Crawford as well as some from Nagy, O'Sullivan and a few more from LaBarbera to come.

This would be incredibly stupid. They've already pretty much said this isn't the season for the Kings to be great, and to trade two guys away for a position player in which they have a guy that will be ready in a year or two would be a bad mistake.
That rumor is a joke! Isn't the Ottawa Sun the same rag that said the Kings were going to get Daniel Alfredsson last season? I guess Ottawa's sports beat writers have been hurting for material now that their CFL team and their AAA baseball teams have both folded!
Then again, this is Crawford that is denying the rumor. I would love to hear Lombardi's take on this.
What does it tell you when every Canadian team is looking to rip you off in a trade for young stars in return for their backup goalies like Raycroft and Gerber?
It tells you hang onto your young guys and your wallet.
I keep telling people that post this crap from Canada that the only way one of those guys is traded is if the return is a young defenseman that is a star. Guys like Weber, Suter, JBo, etc. come to mind. Since they don't have any players like that it's silly for them to even think about.
Yeah, the Kings goaltending is just so solid I applaud Lombardi for not trying to trade for a good one. We'll just wait for Bernier like we've been waiting ever since Kelly Hrudey left. As if Kelly Hrudey were anything to get excited about.
It's about time the Kings had a top 10 goalie. Frolov and Brown for a guy like Vokoun or Luongo? IN A HEARTBEAT.
If you think Florida or Vancouver are going to trade their top goalie one-for-one for either Frolov or Brown, you are NOT realistic.
realist, that's not a realistic trade.
bernier will be our franchise goalie starting next year. labarbera and aubin can hold the fort for a year. i don't see any reason to believe this rumor.
I agree with realist.
Having a top notch goalie is more valuable to a team than high scoring forwards or a steady defenseman.
Luongo got spanked by the Kings the other night. Keep Browny and Fro. We'll be just fine with goal tending
The goalie rumors have been fast and furious.
I've heard, Raycroft, Gerber, Emery, Montoya -- they are all baseless speculation.
What Crawford said, "Hey, that might work. They need a goalie, and who can we get that's young and inexpensive?' They'll look at the salary chart and say that makes sense, but it really doesn't." Is absolutely true.
Trading Frolov and Brown is not a move the kings are about to make not with Bernier waiting in the wings.
I thought that it's common knowledge that -except for Cloutier- Goaltending is not so much a problem as overall team effort, specifically defense. Even an above average Goalie such as Bernier collapsed under the weight of too much responsibility in front of the net. It wouldn't make sense to let a couple of good young players go for a top Goalie that wouldn't do much good if our defense don't have his front.

Rumors say that the Kings have a goalie they will be bringing up from Manchester who will change the face of hockey FOREVER.
The goalie position is a very important one on any Stanley cup winning team. But even the best goalie can't win it without a solid defense in front of him. Just look at Brodeur in New Jersey now without Neidemieyer, Rafalski or Stevens. And look at Luongo when he was in Florida and now in Vancouver. Even a decent goalie can win a cup with an awesome D in front of him, just look at the Ducks last year.
The Kings need to focus on getting at least a good core group of defensemen if not an awesome one. Thats where JMFJ comes in, and hopefully Hickey soon to follow.
Bernier is most definitely the goalie of the future for the Kings, and if we even had a decent defense right now he would still be with us continuing his rookie campaign, and instead of having a 4.03gaa with a .864 save %, he would have more like a 2.00gaa with a .910 save %.
I hate to admit this this early in the season but this group of players that we have are not good enough to make it to the playoffs, and I don't see us trading away Blake or Modry or Thornton or Willsie. So we, as fans, are stuck watching this group of players try and build chemistry and familiarity with one another.
As long as we keep improving game by game I will be happy with this season. Go, Kings Go!
oh, by the way, LaBarbera is one of the worst goalies I have ever seen dawn an NHL jersey.
Has anybody run down who the top ten goalie that is involved with this particular rumor?
And just for grammatical symmetry, it would be "LaBarbera is one of the worst goalies I have ever seen 'don' an NHL jersey."
'10-11 Champs,
Even worse than Robb Stauber & Roman Čechmánek???
I would bet there have at least been discussions regarding this kind of move, and the players mentioned would make sense. Personally, I hope they keep Brown and Frolov and just wait for Bernier. In forty years the Kings have provided 38 years of complete frustration. So, what's another year or two in the scheme of things? Give La Barbera a chance to become an NHL goalie. Did anybody notice Kings draft pick Oscar Moller was voted WHL player of the week. He scored seven goals and ten points in three games. Now that I have spewed my initial anger at the early mediocrity of the Kings, I have realized that I had a knee jerk reaction to the start of the season. I now think there is hope for these guys, and I particularly like watching Kyle Calder. His style of play is refreshing. The other free agents are all improving each game, I think. Even Nagy, who has looked like he had on cement skates is producing a point a game. Although I still don't think Lombardi's free agent signings have been too exciting overall, perhaps they will be assets to trade at the trade deadline for more picks for the future if they don't pan out. Anyway, the bottom line is, no matter how pissed off and disgusted everyone gets, you just have to love the Kings and I can't wait for tonight's game.
I always liked Stauber. I miss those insane Ty Cobb two pad slides into the feet of the guy on a breakaway.
Luongo and Vokoun moved for LESS than Brown/Frolov IMO. Further, I don't understand how any King fan can ignore all the years of crap goaltending, put up with JS Aubin as a "gap" guy and wait for an unproven 19 year old who up till this fall wasn't even playing against guys that can buy a beer in California. If you guys want to "wait it out" and "be patient" for another couple of years after waiting for a top ten goalie for 15, that's your deal. Go ahead.
Realist:
Despite a general desire on the part of pretty much all sports fans everywhere to have a magical trade solve all their team's problems in one fell swoop, there is absolutely no reason to think that even a superstar goalie (were such a player actually available via trade) could turn a non-playoff team into a cup winner, or even a cup contender. and, on the other hand, there is plenty of evidence of superstar goalies sucking with bad teams in front of them.
meanwhile, detroit (with or without hasek, osgood, LEGACE, joseph) is always detroit. anaheim swaps their two goalies IN THE PLAYOFFS and it doesn't make a difference. and think of dallas all those years with the insane number of blocked shots (ludwig's giant shin pads -- get those things on the kings!).
p.s. the reason kings fans "wait it out" and are "patient" is that that's what all sports fans have to do their whole lives. Everybody. Face it. You pick the lifespan of any sports fan, say from age 7 to 70, how many championships do you think his/her teams have won? here's a random sample:
my grandmother, who followed the cubs from 1922 until her death in 1997: zero.
my dad, cubs fan until 1970, tigers fan from 1970 to present, red wings fan from the 1990s on, also Michigan State basketball, football, hockey: so that's one tigers, three wings, one MSU hoops, several MSU hockey, call it ten championships over 70 years and a half dozen sports. 70 years following six to eight leagues, call it five hundred rolls of the dice, and 10 wins. That's 1:50.
Me: Tigers fan in the 70s. Zero. Boston Bruins in the 70s and 80s. That's one (1972). Kings from '88. Zero. Red Sox and Patriots in the 70s and 80s. Zero. Zero. Michigan State football, basketball and hockey in the 70s. One. So that's two for me in 40 years. About the same as my dad's numbers, since he follows twice as many sports and has done it for twice as long.
Even if you were the luckiest or most blessed sportsfan on the planet, how many champtionships have your teams won? I'm wondering. New York? A Yankees/Rangers/Knicks/Jets fan for the last seventy years. How many champtionships is that? Isn't your life still mostly waiting for next year, mostly disappointment? I'm sure somebody out there has the numbers.
anyway, i'm just saying, patience is not only for kings fans.
