Pronger reaction

| | Comments (22) |

*tap tap* Is this thing on? First of all, I want to apologize to everyone for the problems we've been having on these blogs. It's ridiculous and inexcusable. Our online guru, Josh Kleinbaum, and his team have been working for days to overcome the massive incompetence that created this problem, and hopefully they have succeeded. Please let me and Matt know if there are continuing problems.

Anyway, for those who haven't seen/heard about it, there was an incident at the end of overtime last night. In the moments after the buzzer, Michal Handzus shot the puck at Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Chris Pronger took offense, slammed Handzus into the boards and started a scrum. Handzus and Pronger ended up shoving and Pronger eventually pummeled Handzus with a few punches.

Pronger got an instigator penalty and because the penalty occurred in the final five minutes, Pronger was eligible to receive a one-game suspension from the league office. But no suspension came down today. Here's a sampling of reaction from the Kings' dressing room:

Handzus: ``It happens. It's not in my control. It's hockey. It's just one of those things. It's one game and then you move on. (A suspension) is not up to me. It's up to the league.''

Michael Cammalleri: ``I don't think (Pronger's hit) was necessary, but I'm not the expert. It's up to Colin Campbell. ... It does (carry over to the next game) and it doesn't. The emotion and intensity and the desire to beat them carries over, but the team that does a better job of not letting the (B.S.) carry over will do a better job. The team that can focus will have success.''

Jack Johnson: ``I don't know why (Pronger) would do that. I just kind of laughed at him. There was no need to do that. He obviously knows Handzus isn't a fighter. He was just trying to beat the buzzer with a shot.''

Derek Armstrong: ``I think it was an instigator. Handzus didn't take his gloves off so I think that's an instigator right there. (Pronger) is a hard-nosed player. There's a time and place for everything, and we can't get caught up in that stuff.''

Marc Crawford: ``(Pronger is) a competitive guy. Everybody respects his competitiveness and we have to be ready to play against him. I didn't think (the hit) warranted anything and it didn't get anything.''

Pronger's the cheapest piece of sh!t in hockey! Completely gutless move by their captain when he knew he'd get away with it & there'd be no harm done to his team. Bodyblows while a ref pins Zeus to the glass???! I REALLY hope there's retaliation tomorrow night!

I would guess that the reason for the suspension being rescinded by the league was because of the intent of the rule...to prevent players from jumping onto the ice in the waning minutes of a game just to get into a fight. That clearly wasn't the case here, regardless of what happened during the altercation.

The only type of suspension he can get now is if he gets ANOTHER game misconduct. Kicking him out for the shootout isn't much punishment. Enforcers now know if they're on the ice, they can pretty much get away with stuff like this... It's a bad precedent set by the league.

I don't understand the NHL, but that's nothing new! What's the point of having rules if you're not going to enforce them? Pronger got a game misconduct for instigating a fight within the last five minutes of a game. I thought a one game suspension was warranted? Plus Randy Carlyle should have been fined $10,000 as well. I read where Wayne Gretzky was fined ten grand earlier this week for a similar incident in a game against San Jose. I guess this rule does not apply to the marquee players of the NHL?

Pronger is the most underated cheap shot artist in the league.
That piece garbage is as dirty as Sean Avery, or more.
Yet the league only hands out one day suspensions to him.
Why. Is it because he earns such a high salary or because he has some talent. I hope the leagus stops giving him special treatment and gives him the appropriate punishment.
He along with his butt-buddy, Chris Kunitz should be placed in a cage and fight to death.
Hopefully, they'd kill each other. Then leagus would be better off without both of them.
I can't wait till Ivanans makes them his bitch.

Ok. I'll be the one who'll take off the purple colored glasses.

Yes, Pronger went overboard and should have gotten the instigator and probably the 1 game suspension.

But reading all the Kings talking like it was completely unprovoked is annoying.

Handzus CLEARLY shot after the buzzer and he knew it. Everyone on the ice knew it. Everyone in the building knew it. It was bush league, and I don't know why he'd do it.

Ok. Off my soapbox now. :)

What a bunch of whiny babies. He clearly shot the puck after the horn went. Pronger confronted him, and Handzus punched Pronger in the face first - then proceeded to get the life beat out of him. Talk about a waste of $4 million.

Try looking at the play objectively or watch the reply, you'll see he shot it late - there was no need for that. Two Queens turtled quite nicely in the same game. I thought Sean Avery was out there again.

Look out boys. Looks like there's a quacker in our midst.

What's up Robert? No duck blinds in the OC?

Robert,

I wondering if you think that Zues' shot at the end of overtime last night was more or less chicken sh!t than Scott Neidermeyer shooting the puck right at Daniel Alfredsson at the end of play during the Cup Finals last season?

Before tomorrow night's game, I'd like to hear something like this from the Kings' locker room:

"We gotta win that fight tonight, we gotta get even with the Socs. For Johnny....Stay gold, Ponyboy."

Uhh, wasn't it Alfredson who shot it at Neidermeyer?? Yes, Zeus' shot was after the buzzer, but barely and it was "soft" with no bad intent. I think Pronger didn't do anything wrong to go and confront Zeus, but it got out of control. From my seat on the couch, I can't say that Pronger was justified or not, but it seemed a bit chicken sh!t to wail at a guy who was being held back from defending himself. We all know Pronger is a cheap shot artist. The "I'm so tall my elbows naturally cream other players heads into the boards" line is b.s. You're responsible for your elbows just like your stick.

PS - duck fans like Coldplay.

So Crawford is defending Pronger publicly? And nobody questions that??

By saying that Pronger's hit didn't deserve anything, isn't he implying that Handzus is a bonehead? That's just so strange for a head coach to do. If I were Handzus, I'd be pretty pissed rigtht now. I guess Zeus is in Crow's doghouse, eh?

Ok, so supposedly the shot came after the buzzer. Regardless, at the time, it looked to me like Handzus was just trying to take a shot thinking he had time and had to do something with the remaining ticks.

If the shot was clearly late and Handzus should have known, I can understand the Ducks getting in his face. After that, if I remember correctly, Zeus threw the first punch at Pronger, then he got his ass kicked. No surprize there. I guess that's part of the reason why so many people are so pissed at Pronger. That, and his punk reputation.

Honestly though, if the situation was reversed and Johnson had stood up for LaBarbera, a lot of us would probably be saying that he's a stud.

Bottom line here is that if Handzus shot the puck after the buzzer, he made a mistake. He's a pro and probably wasn't surprized that the Ducks came after him. Pronger probably took this too seriously and kicked Handzus' ass without good cause. But Crawford definitely puzzles me by calling out Handzus publicly.

That's how I see it. Anyway, I expect some nice fights tomorrow night at Staples Center. Can't wait.

Knowing the Kings, there probably won't be anything happening tomorrow and it'll be just another game.

Pronger is a boob, a complete knob in public with the social grace of a lump of sea weed. He not very tough with out his stick. Watch tonight how many times he uses it to defend himself is little scrums "that happen every game". Boob

Eric said:

Crow's comments don't say anything about Handzus. All he's saying is he didn't think Pronger's hit warranted a suspension or a fine, and Colin Campbell obviously felt the same way.

The play's over. The game's over. Time to focus on the game tonight instead of worrying about who did what in a scrum after the whistle last game.

Who do the Kings have that could retaliate against Pronger? Can we really afford to have 3 or 4 players dog pile the guy? No.

Just get CP tonite or better yet, pummel Pahlson

The shot was a little late, and I didn't have a problem with Pronger coming to give him some lip or a push. But his wailing away for free is the bad part.

The league is always easy on Pronger for some reason. When he got two suspensions in two weeks in the playoffs he got a soft suspension for the second one as well. The first I can see ok he's not been suspended in a while...the second one in two weeks should have been 5 days to a week.
