Prospects update
In minor-league news, Jon Quick has been promoted from Reading (ECHL) to Manchester (AHL) and Daniel Taylor went the other way. Quick had a 7-5-1 record and a 2.46 goals-against average (10th best in the league) in Reading. Not sure what this means for the other two guys in Manchester, but something might be going on here. The Kings want to develop Quick, but why would they put him in Manchester, with Cloutier and Ersberg already there? Taylor hadn't made it into a single game with the Monarchs. I'll have to look into this...
Here's something that's more certain. Teddy Purcell -- although I'm told he now prefers to go by ``Ted'' -- is off to a great start in Manchester. Here's a report from Purcell's hometown paper in Newfoundland.

J.P. Hoornstra writes about NHL and IHL hockey for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. He welcomes any and all dialogue on the finer points of hockey.

Jill Painter joined the Daily News in 2000 and during the last eight years she's covered the Dodgers, Cal State Northridge, UCLA, Kings, golf and everything in between. Even though she's from Colorado, she still freezes in the Staples Center press box but always manages to thaw her fingers in time to make deadline. E-mail Jill at

Ersberg hit his head and had a pretty sizeable cut in his last outing, and had to be relieved by Cloutier. I am sure the Kings would rather bring in a goalie that has played some games than throw Taylor to the wolves.
Thanks Marc...
Love Purcell, can't wait to see him play at Staples. I know the season is still young but it looks like the Kings are are firmly entrenched in the race for the Steven Stamkos award.
I loved the Purcell article, and the little tag at the bottom that recalled the name Don Howse, as being the first Newfie to play for the Kings.
Howse was a career minor leaguer that all of a sudden found himself playing a regular shift for the Kings during the last half of the 79-80 season (painful...) Of course 1980 brought kids like Greg Terrion and Jim Fox into the fold and Howse became a footnote and was out of hockey within a couple of years.
The other great note about Newfoundland that you might not know (or even care about) --- they are on the half hour! So, when it's 7PM in Southern California, it's 2:30 in Newfoundland! True!!!
The only thing I can think of is perhaps they are trying to give Taylor some more playing time. If he hadn't played a single game in Manchester then perhaps they feel that he should get some time with Reading or perhaps keep switching with Quick and split up that time.
I'd MUCH rather the Kings go for the John Tavares award, that that appears to be next year. :(
From everything I've heard and read, Tavares may make Crosby look like a 3rd liner.
"...Kings are are firmly entrenched in the race for the Steven Stamkos award."
Except for the fact that we're 6 points out of 4th place in the conference with 62 games to play
@Paul
Crosby is a playmaker and Tavares is a goal scorer. Tavares is set to be in the 2009 draft so you should hope the Kings do bad next season if you want a shot at him.

You gotta stop reading the tabloids :)
Well Cloutier is struggling and from what I've read potentially injured and with Ersberg not being expected to play 4 games in 5 nights, there is a better opportunity available for Quick to play against more talented competition and potentially play Cloutier all the way to Reading, but thats just me dreaming here.
Hopefully DL sees it like this:
The development of Quick > Cloutier finding his game back.
Also Antonio is doing a fine job in LA so theres no need to rush, hell or even pursue the Cloutier debacle even farther, I say send him to Reading and let him rot, unless of course he wants to drop the gloves for the kings as a F, then call him up.
So in short Cloutier can be playing anywhere, hes gonna suck. Quick on the other hand needs consistent play against higher levels of talent because he needs to develop.
John - True, everyone is close right now. But everyone in our division is getting better and we have yet to improve. Yotes have a goalie now, the Stars got a wake up call and are winning with younger players. Ducks and Sharks will be rolling by New Year.
I say, after one year and 20 games, our 'veteran presence' needs to go and we should win or lose with our young guys. Send up Petiot, Harrold, Purcell, Brady, Westgarth and Gauthier. Anyone else?
Dear Mr. Lombardi,
Stick to your guns. The fans that know the game support what you are doing. Thanks for your hard work.
Could not have said it better myself Anonymous! Keep it up DL!

Is he going to take old yeller Crawford out back?
I think we should "Let Go" Crawford, and have Lewis take over!!!
