« Kings lose 5-2 | Main | Long meeting, no practice »

Notes and quotes from the locker room

I've never seen Crawford so upset as after this game. He was frustrated with the team's play and also livid with Ryan Smyth. He wants Smyth's play jabbing his stick into LaBarbera reviewed by the NHL. LaBarbera injured his ribs on the play.

There's a team meeting scheduled before practice tomorrow. It probably won't be pretty.

``There’s no excuse for the outcome of that game to be the way it was,’’ forward Kyle Calder said. ``We came out hard and played our solid game. We didn’t play that way in the second and third.’’

The Kings blew a 2-0 lead for the second time in three games, though this one occurred a little earlier than usual. The Kings were outshot 17-4 in the second period, which was right up there with their worst periods of the year.

``We’re frustrated for sure,’’ Patrick O’Sullivan said. ``We’ve been in this situation before and to keep making the same mistakes is the hardest part.’’

O'Sullivan was one of the bright spots, staking the Kings to the 2-0 lead by setting up Raitis Ivanans and Anze Kopitar with pretty passes. It was his first two-assist game of the season.

But it was all downhill from there.

``It wasn’t our best performance,’’ Crawford said. ``We had a great first period and it looked like we were going to have a great game, and then the wheels completely fell off. I wish I had an explanation as to why.’’

Even though I can't stand Crawford, I can't blame the coach for this loss.
The last four games he's done a pretty good job putting out descent lines without juggling them.

This was a team failure. Players just gave up after the first period. When opponents start their cycle in the kings zone, all you see are our players chasing and chasing with no direction.
The kings are absolutely helples when other teams start their cycle.

Smyth is is a cheap shot artist just like Pronger. He had no reason to charge the goalie. He wasn't pushed. I don't think he'll be suspended. The league wants to see serious injuries first.

I hope the team gets something productive out of the next team meeting. I'm sick of tired of this last place bullsh_it. I want a playoff team already.

Sully, by far was the best kings player. He set up both goals perfectly. And he shut out the Avalanche power play completely. Yet, I eas surprised to see he was a Minus-2 today. Go figure.

Matt or Rich,

I would love for you guys to offer up your opinion or especially if you can ask Crawford what he thinks of the Kings softness. I was at tonight's game and I don't think I can ever remember a Kings team showing as much finesse as they did tonight especially from their defensemen. They Avalanche were pushing them around. Our defensemen were allowing them to stand in front of the net, they rarely stand up anyone moving into our zone and on more than one occasion it was a guy like Camallieri standing in front of the night up against one of their forwards. This team has zero toughness. We are easily moved off the puck.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Paul--well said. I'd like to know if DL plans to acquire any players who are willing to come to the aid of a teammate, too. The Kings' players don't stick up for each other. It's just a collection of individuals that can't fend for themselves. They're so soft it's embarassing.

FIRE CRAWFORD. Thanks....bye.

joe said:

Anthony, I disagree.

After this game I would be ecstatic if crawford was fired.
This quote, "I wish I had an explanation as to why.’’ is a perfect example of why. If he doesn't know why he obviously shouldn't be coaching in the nhl and I probally should, holy shit.

This game was lost by Crawford, he fucking sucks as a coach. He spends the first quarter of the year tinkering with the lines every 5 minutes saying he has to tinker with the lines because you can never know whos actually going to be skating any given night. Well, if this was true you would think after scoring both kings goals basically by himself that Osullivan would get some fucking PP time. But no, and this is why crawford should be fired.
But back to how he lost us the game.
The kings are up 2-0, playing great. The kings get a PP, even better. Kopitar-brown-cammy dominate for awhile keeping the puck down low for a good minute, the puck is frozen. Crawford puts out Nagy-Armstrong-Calder.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
WTF ? did he want the kings to start losing ? WTF did osullivan do to deserve NOT being on the PP ? get 2 assists instead of 2 goals ? Not score a hat trick in the first period ? Well Nagy didn't do a single fucking thing in tonights game and he still got time on the PP. So crawford puts out his shitty line and they lose all the kings momentum and give CO the momentum. Game over ?
Yes as much of a little thing as it was I'll be damned if any of you can come up with a better reason for how the kings lost their momentum so fast.
And back to crawford getting fired I don't think the kings have played 5 60 minutes games of hockey yet this season, as a coach that is your responsibility to make players accountable and keep them skating. Crawford absolutely fucking sucks at this. this team plays with no passion or heart and could care less about losing.
So, while the ships still sinking, strip Blake of his C. It is literally disgusting for me to watch how much he really does not care AT ALL about this teams failure. Give it to Cammy and let him push the team, obviously blake is still getting his 6 mil a year paycheck so he doesn't give a shit as long as he can surf and collect paychecks. Blake should be disgusted with himself, I can't believe he hasn't taken the C off of his own sweater. I guess he doesn't care so much this time around because he is getting paid much more than he is worth, pathetic.

So I think I'm done, Fuck Nagy, Crawford, and Blake. Mainly crawford though because he single handedly lost the game that Patrick Osullivan single handedly almost won. Does Crawford not want Osullivan to succeed holy shit it drives me mad how stupid he is.

joe said:

Oh obviously so i dont look dumb the game wasn't lost in the first period by that PP, it's obviously Crawford's job to motivate the team between periods so that they come out with jump or some momentum from the first. But no his team just comes out and rolls over like a scolded dog.

Just pointing out that Mr. Bright Spot, who is arguably my favorite player on this pathetic team, was on the ice for the first FOUR Avalanche goals. Was he the direct cause of four Avs goals? No, but he was there, sulking back to the bench with the rest of the losers!

Marc Nathan said:

P.S. You go to war with Lottaslop Nagy and Flubomir Visnovsky... I'll go to war with Ryan Smyth or Chris Pronger ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

Don't forget, Kings fans loved McSorley, they loved Avery... you put one of these so-called "cheap shot" artists in a Kings uniform and you love 'em like nobody's business.

Of course, if the Kings HAD Ryan Smyth, he'd be on a line with Willsie and Zeiler... so, who knows :)

The Ex-Sportswriter Author Profile Page said:

joe is right. It is Crawford's job to get these young kids to play with some passion. With the game already lost and only two minutes on the clock, there was some "hop" in their play, and everybody started firing the puck at the net. Why can't that be the way the Kings play from the opening faceoff until the end of the game? With all those young legs and young scorers, they should play-play-play and force the other team into stupid penalties or turnovers. Instead, we get this "finesse" hockey with touch passes and little or no hard body checks. This all goes back to the coach's system, so the bottom line is ...

Crawford is to blame.

Aaron said:

How short is the collective memory of Kings fans?

When Dean Lombardi says the "youngsters" on this team need to take responsibility for winning and losing he literally means THEY are on the hook.

Crawford and his staff draw up a game plan each night and the so-called core of this team has to be held accountable for not executing the game plan.

This loss more than any other loss in the past two seasons falls on the shoulders of the players.

When the young players on this team don't show up this team loses. It's as simple as that.

Patrick O'Sullivan showed up tonight. Dustin Brown showed up tonight. Brad Stuart showed up for half the game. Kopitar was there for about 18 minutes. LaBarbera showed up until he got run by Ryan Smyth. Beyond that it was ghost town.

I really and truly hope that Crawford makes an example of some of the players for the next game and expresses to them that if they don't feel like showing up on a nightly basis then they don't have a place in the lineup.

Marc Nathan, for the record Ryan Smyth isn't a dirty player. I don't think he meant to injure Labs. However I still would have liked to see someone make him pay for that! He should have been a target for the rest of the game, but instead was allowed to score a second goal! Talk about pouring salt in an open wound. That hurt.

jc_9 said:

I was a big supporter of Blake returning to this team and I didn't think it was a bad idea to make him Captain. His play this season has been nothing more than below average.

When you have guys like Blake, Stuart, and Visnovsky on your blueline you don't expect that Modry would be your best defensemen. His play has really impressed me this season. I was one moaning and groaning when he was re-signed.

The Smyth incident from last night needed to be dealt with and no one stepped up. How do you expect your goaltenders to hang in there and make the save when they can't trust the players in front of them to make sure they don't get run? This team rarely sticks up for each other. I don't think that's a good sign for a team.

nykingfan said:

This loss has absolutely nothing to do with rebuilding or the young kids...This had to do with a team that was manhandled for 42 minutes straight. They beat the Kings to every loose puck and hit the Kings D down low. The Kings never responded. Johnson and Modry were pathetic. They let the Avs swarm in front of Labarbara and never knocked them out of the crease. That's how Labarbara got hurt. How do you not go after Smyth in the game after that?
They all think they're too important to drop the gloves for a fellow teammate. What a bunch of individualists.
I blame Crawford for not getting in their face in between periods and get them to play with anger and passion. They were like the ice capades out there.
Sully was the ONLY bright spot for the Queens.

Nick said:

WEAK,,,WEAK,,, WEAK!!!!! the pain...the horror... our d is getting raped... did Colorado score all their goals from 10 ft or in the crease, or am i blind? nobody is laying the av forwards on their asses... our D is looking like a bunch of panzies... where is JMFJ, or has he not graduated college yet? can our D please stand some ground?!?!?!

I support Crawford being fired... and I can't stand Lombardi's excuse of not calling up our 'young prospects' by saying we'll damage their development... well hell, we're damaging our teams development by letting our 'core players' play with these old overpaid farts whos lack of passion are making us lose (Thornton, Handzeus, Blake[who is making Lubos season a piece of sh*t] ARMSTRONG [can we waive this guy already!!! his lack of production, lack of anything has really hurt the team... can he get into a fight like he did last year,,, remember when he got in that fight and then for the next 3 weeks was unstoppable???]) I WANT LAPPY BACK... we have no muscle,,, nobody who'll drop the gloves (besides ivanans,,,who cant fight with a vison & broken face) we need somebody who wont take any crap! so bring up some gritty guys,,, bring up Cliche, or bring up Gauthier, hell get Simmonds in here already!!!!

If we keep playing like this... Cami & Frolov & Kopitar, when they're old enough, will be UFA's who dont come back and end up blossoming on teams like Buffalo or Detroit or even worse ANAHEIM! (sacrilidge) and where will we be then when Boyle & simmonds and purcell come up to a crappy franchise? Stop with the Boyle D experiment,,, bring him up here to be a dominant 2nd line center so we can foster our own 'joe thornton' dominant scoring center who nobody messes with,,, waive dallman& trade preissing & blake, these guys are weaklings who get dominated by our oppositions forwards game in and game out... bring up some big Dmen,,, give Petiot a chance or Mormina or hell,,, get Gleason back... i miss that guy,,, and i'd rather have him than half of our dmen this season... nobody messed with him... we have no stay at home strong dmen, and its a fricking lie that the new NHL needs 'mobile skating dmen',,, screw that,,, you need a blend of mobile dmen and hard hitting bad ass dmen that lay the opositons top line forwards on their asses!!!! for our teams salary, we deserve better than this!!!!!

I say, win or lose with the young guys we've got now... it'll build their character either way and create a team that are unified,,, same age, let them all gain their NHL experience now, let them all realize that they're in the same boat, so by the time they're all in their primes, at 26-29 they'll have 2-3 seasons of NHL experience and be playing for eachother and not be panzies who go to another team as an UFA... ok, done... let me know what u think!

Its time to bench Nagy and begin the Teddy Purcell project. Prucell leads the AHL in points so far this year as a rookie. Not bad IMO.

Minus all the cussing, Joe is dead on. (I get the frustration though, believe me.) That was the most pathetically coached game I have seen in ages. I was truly hoping to wake up this morning to the headline: 'Crawford done in LA' on TSN.

I can see I'm gonna need more seats on the 'Fire Crawford' bandwagon.

Not only are we soft as proven by our total lack of response to the skewering of Labs, (Who misses Avery now?...uh..ME) but we have a softer captain and a Deaf Mute Assistant. Now I love Lubo and he's grippin' this season as he's trying too hard and just failing miserably, but he is not the right choice for leadership of any kind. Honestly, I don't know who to give the C to. Cammi is not ready. I thought he was, but his play has backed off some. I'd like to see him step it up, injured or not. This team needs a leader and we'll probably have to trade for one. Ideas???

Now I'm MOST worried about Labs being out. Who do we bring up? Is the beach ball coming back??? Get the antacid folks...

Forget about Crawford and forget about the rebuilding and forget about AEG!!!!!

The Kings stink because the PLAYERS are not performing and executing. We don't lose because of Modry, Willsie, Zeiler, Thornton, Handzus, Nagy, Armstrong, Preissing.

We lose because of the guys who play the most minutes and have the most responsibility - KOPITAR, CAMMALLERI, BROWN, FROLOV, VISNOVSKY, BLAKE, STUART, JOHNSON. Where is the leadership from the players? The veterans and the young guys?

No trade is going to solve this problem. This TEAM has to start playing like it has the DESIRE and HEART to work, hustle, execute, think and care about competing, improving and winning.

If it doesn't start now, Dean Lombardi will be rebuilding for a long time.

Brian said:

A lack of heart and desire is why. This team has some talent. They have shown that. These are NHL players and a coach can only do so much. Alot of these players need to wake up and realize how good they have it. This team has shown when they want to play as a team they can play well. There is no excuse for not showing up for one or two periods at a time. I was disgusted that no one went after Ryan Smyth. That's unexcusable as far as I'm concerned. Wake up Kings!!!!!!

KingFan4ever said:

Like I said before, this current team does not have any bite, especially when they are pushed around.

The PP is so achingly predictable that they look like an AHL team playing in the NHL. They should take a page from the Avalanche as far as PK is concerned. They are so aggressive and take chances but that is why they are effective.

They were out hit and out grinded by a team that played the night before.. on home ice.. what does that tell you?

Lombardi can keep going on like this and empty out Staples center or make a significant change.

Empty seats means AEG could have a nice crispy pink slip coming his way...

and how many of the avs starters are out of the line up???

what a joke.

DL and MC, go sell your crazy feel good bullsh!t somewhere else, we're all stocked up here.

i realize that we may not be a playoff team, but this kind of play, while typical of the kings this season, is totally unacceptable from supposed professional athletes.

people need to be benched, sent down, traded, fired etc.

tell me who will want to sign here next year as a UFA with this going on?

that is besides a washed up veteran being paid twice what he should be?

again, DL and MC quit talking and DO SOMETHING!

There's no HEART on this team!!!! And with all this bonding of the players???? The London trip, the Amazing Race event. I really don't see any bonding!!!! Your goalie gets speared, and Smyth breaks his stick doing it, and the Kings do nothing!!! The next shift Smyth came out he should have been LEVELED!!!!! No wonder the Kings are in last place. And all Crawford can say is he wants the league to review this?? He should have sent someone out to check Smyth THROUGH the boards!!!! What a wimp of a coach!!! And it carries through to the players as well. Bonding my a--!!!

Colorado was in front of the net all night long. Look at the goals (except for the break away goal from Hensick)....

Stastney in the slot with O'Sullivan STANDING right next to him...

Smyth "awarded" goal, but Stastney skating infront of the net with Kopitar STANDING and WATCHING him skate into the slot...

MY FAVORITE, Smyth drives to the net, gets in between Modry and Johnson (it looked like a frickin' sandwich), Modry leaves the slot to go behind the net, Smyth gets the rebound with Johnson still STANDING next to him, Smyth spins around and scores....Not to mention that Smyth started the play skating the puck into the zone over the blueline with Kings just in front of him, a perfect time for a CRUSHING BODYCHECK on the player that just speared your goalie!!!!

Hlinka in the slot scoring with Stuart STANDING with his stick across the waste of Hlinka.

Does anybody know how to clear the slot on this team??? Does anybody hnow how to control the middle??? Does anybody know how to tie up a stick. Does anybody know how to make somebody pay when touching the puck in the slot???

Marc Nathan: about your comment on Pronger and Smyth...EXACTLY. Dirty players often win games. Recall Claude Lemiuex, the Geoff Courtnall incident, and look at the entire ducks and red wings teams of late. The mean, semi-criminal hockey players seem to have that mental edge. The Kings are about as far from that mentality as any team could possibly get. I would hope that DL gets a clue and stops this whole "I bring in players with the character that I like" approach. Nice guys finish last in the NHL.

yeah I cussed a little more than I normally would have but I actually went to that game and was excited that Patrick Osullivan showed what he can do game in and game out when given the opportunity, then Crawford went to work on the Kings.
No Osullivan on the PP. Check.
Army-Nagy-Calder instead. Check.
Continue to pair Blake and Vis even though that pairing has done nothing but suck ass and bring lubo down this season. Check.
There was even one time where Crawford put his line out before Colorado did, holy crap did he forget the kings were playing at home ?
Either way horrible job by Crawford to lose the game that Patrick Osullivan almost won.

Rich you should check into this and bring it up with Crawford, Id be willing to bet this team has a worse record when (1)scoring the first goal, (2) getting a 2 goal lead, and (3) having a 1-2 goal lead going into the second period than (a) any other team in the NHL or (b) than they do when they don't score first or when they fall behind 2 goals. This team absolutely sucks at holding 2 goal leads.
