Blake on Chelios comments

| | Comments (31) |

Last week, Red Wings defender Chris Chelios said this of Rob Blake in an interview on a Detroit radio station: "He's in a situation there where there's just no light at the end of the tunnel and he's lost his drive right now. I've been there. I talked to him last time we played him, and he would love to come here."

Blake's response: "I don’t know if that’s exactly what was said (between he and Chelios), so I’ll leave it at that."

Blake said he wasn't upset at all with Chelios for making the comments. When I asked if there's any truth to him losing his drive, he gave a long ``Well ...,'' then said he was still trying and he didn't know any more he can say about that.

I wanted to add in that Blake said he hadn't heard about any comments Chelios made. I read him the quote.

nice job captain.

i would have more respect for Blake if he was just forthright about it.

something like:

" it's been a very difficult year for me... i've struggled... the team is struggling. losing is not fun and i let my emotions get the better of me."

or

"i said something to a friend of mine that wasn't intended to be public"

blah blah blah

am i missing something here?

to me your captain shouldn't be putting himself or the team in this position.

dumb.

I agree...not only is Chelios an idiot for talking about something that was said in confidence, but shame on Blake for not being upset about it.

Good riddance to bad rubbish!

but if we trade Blake where will JMFJ live?

Americans, don't leave a budding all-star homeless in the cold. Donate your shelter for JMFJ this winter.

all i got to say is chelios is an arrogant (youknowwhat) and has no respect for other teams fans... way to go and put down a whole franchise by saying our CAPTAIN would love to leave LA and go to a winning Detroit team. When things were tough and Mattias Nordstrom was our captain he never said things like this.. he said we have to work at it and make this team better! way to go blakie

Quattro said:

wow - I'm not a Blake hater but that's a pretty weak response. Shipping him out at the deadline is the best thing for all involved I think.

we rock.....but that is exactly what Blake is thinking so it's not Chelios' fault for tell the true; but rather captain Bowlby's fault for thinking that and then telling someone else that. Blake is an absolute dooshbag. I will be glad to see him go and I hope to God he doesn't come back next year. It's already going to be bad enough when his Jersey gets retired with this organization.

David said:

i don't have a huge issue with Blake's response. Sure I would have appreciated if it were not true, but you can't blame him for saying what he did.

I don't doubt that he loves LA and the Kings. But think about it, i'm sure it's nobody's dream to end their career on a last place team. His comments and attitude (ie. not requesting a trade, but being open to it) seems to parallel that. I wouldn't mind seeing him stay a King if he takes a significant less amount. I think he would love to play with the Kings next year, assuming they actually put together a great season (which we know they are all capable of).

Now that being said, I do think he should try his hardest to give his best effort each and every game. I'm just saying, I can see how it must be difficult.

Brett said:

Wow, i was a fan of giving Blake the benefit of the doubt that he was doing his best to improve his game but this is beyond what happens on the ice. This is a major leadership role that he definitely is not filling. I can definitely see the "C" being on Kopi of Johnson in the next couple years. Thanks Blake for your vote of confidence, oh and showing the young guys how to do things.

JMFJ is a big boy now and can buy Bud Light on his own. Plus, he moved out a few weeks ago.

Blake's word illuminate two points - 1. He cares about winning and at this stage of his career, what is the point of enduring the grind of an NHL season if there is no reward? and 2) He respects the Kings enough not to outright say "Trade me." He knows the GM ultimately decides that.

He would have been wise to just say, "No comment."

Also, shouldn't Chelios' quote be, "there's just no light at the end of the tunnel"? I know you are pulling from what is out there/online but that doesn't make much sense.

shiznauts. Rob Blake's black jersey was the first jersey i ever had as a kid. he was my favorite player and i was happy when they brought him back. now i say trade him and make Brownie the captain.

for all the people who have short memories and think we don't miss Cammy anymore during his injury, he's one of the guys who really was vocal about hating to lose. he shows heart like he wants to be here and that's one reason why i really like him

i'd take a bunch of guys we can build on for next year who really want to be here over maybe an extra 5-6 wins this year.

Well lets see:

So far:
-he has the TITLE, as Captain
-he has the MONEY, which is pretty much most of what cares about
-soon he'll have a CUP CONTENDING TEAM.

We as loyal fans should be celebrating this TRAITORS departure.
Good ridance.
I hope he never returns.
And I hope the door doesn't hit him from behind.

After reading some of the comments here, I think that the whole damn team should go to DL and ask to be traded cause it's been a tough season and who wants to start or finish a career on a last place team. For crying out loud, players make the team and if it isn't championship caliber then you make some moves, learn how to play the system, or work your ass off to become a top notch player. When you become part of ANY team you are not guaranteed anything, there isn't anything in any contract that says after playing in the NHL for 15 years or more a player is guaranteed that he will be traded to a team that just happens to be smarter then the average NHL system and get his name on the Stanley Cup. I'd trade his sorry ass to Tampa or if it was possible I'd send him to Manchester and bring up someone who gives a damn about "TEAM" rather than self. And what really rags me is that half of you think it's ok for the CAPTAIN of ANY team to say things like that, just the guy I WOULDN'T want to have covering my back in combat.

David said:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't DL sign Blake with the express intention of Rob finishing his career as a member of the Kings? I'm sure Kings management also thought he would be a good mentor for many of their young players.

If this was agreed upon by all parties, then why would trading him now even be a topic of conversation? It must be creating a big distraction amongst the players in the dressing room.

Blake already left the Kings once to win a Stanley Cup in Colorado. He seriously needs to hang up his skates this Spring and retire.

KingFan4ever said:

If there is anyone that annoys me more than Jeremy Roenick, it's Chris Chelios.

The guy has always been a ass and baiting the obviously loose-lipped Rob Blake is pretty freakin' low.

As for Blake, his stock which is already at an all time low just got even lower. He knew very well what he was getting into with an organization that was starting from scratch.

I think he came back because all he wanted is the close proximity to his Manhattan Beach digs. Basically he wants the paycheck without the consequences.

Heck, everyone wants the team to be better than it is but he needs to keep his pie hole shut and elevate his play. I suppose leading by example is not in his vocabulary.

I don't doubt his desire to win but he needs a reality check and a ticket of of LA if that's what he wants.

ChrisH said:

Come on guys - it's an honest comment. The team stinks and anyone that has played competitive sports knows it can really drag you down when you lose night after night no matter who you are. I just hope we can move him before he potentially gets injured. Have a good day.

Hey guys I got a good one here, I've got an old high school buddy who has become a quacks fan(bandwagoner I'm sure),well he has been hasseling me about my Kings. We were competitive during school(surfing, girls, beer drinking, etc)and then for a short time afterwards(work).I've been a Kings fan for about 20 years and just like most of you, will continue.I finally told my old buddy that we Kings fans would never trade Bob Miller,Foxy,Nic and Bailey, for Ahlers, Hey-wood-ya-blow(the whole team)that stupid wildwing, and the STANLEY CUP.Well hopefully he'll get the point,I sure hope the Ducks don't repeat again I'd never hear the end of it. Oh one trade I would do is AEG for the Samuellis.

Welllllllllll....

Don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out of town. Chase it again Pal, because you sure didn't help LA do it.

CBGB said:

You know what Blake will do next?

- Whine again that the Kings have no heart

- Badmouth his coach

- Refuse a trade to a contending team that would have netted the Kinga a 1st round pick and a decent prospect

Yup, your CAPTAIN

YOU wanted him.

YOU welcomed him back with open arms

YOU got burned like that girlfriend who doesn't really love you but liked to use you.

Boooooooooooooooooo

Its way sad to hear that. Its even more sad that its our captain basically saying he has lost the passion for the game and for us Kings fans. Im a huge Blake fan but its without doubt time to move on without him.

Our captain needs to be consistent, needs to score, needs to finish all checks and get emotions stirring. DUSTIN BROWN FOR CAPTAIN !!!

Rob Blake said:

Hey everyone, Rob Blake here.

I just wanted to let you all know my plans.

For starters I plan on dragging the Kings through the mud. I figure for 6 million ill skate at about 70% and I promise that during the game Ill be thinking about anything other than defense. Then at the trade deadline Im trading in my purple and gold for a pretty red sweater. Dont be sore, I promise to bring the cup back to LA to show you all what it looks like.

I know Im wearing the "C" right now but I told the Kings to put a "$" instead.

But lets not focus on these bad times, lets remember the good times. Remember those two Stanley Cup championships I won? That was awsome!!

See ya later Kings fans. Maybe in a couple years after Im done in Detroit I can come back to LA and sign a new 12 year 120 million dollar contract. That would be sweet.

Love,
Rob Blake

PS. Im hot for Chelios

I think blakie should have said no comment when he was asked about chelios comment. But have anyone of u guys really heard what chelios was saying???? It is very easy to take things out of it context and put it in something else and it doesnt help with u guys whining about it here.
Im also very disappointed about blakies play this season and I think it was a mistake to make him the captain of this team. I can also understand that u guys want him traded and trade him to detroit will give us a first round pick who is gonna be the 30th pick.
Are u guys sure he wants to be traded?? I know he hasnt said no to be traded but he hasnt said yes either and its up to DL if he wants to trade him.

KingFan4ever said:

...Oh and the only reason that worthless Chelios has lasted this long is he's avoided gut-busting, skull-cracking checks from real d-men like Scott Stevens.

Not to mention he and Roenick where an embarrasment to USA hockey when they trashed their rooms in Nagano...

Thank goodness for real classy US players like Modano, Mullen and Lafontaine...

If that's the company Blake would rather keep then good riddance.... I think the LA Kings would do just fine.

nykingfan said:

Chelios is a scumbag who I hope gets nailed by Dustin tonight.

I'm not really sure how to look at this.
Blake obviously doesn't want to stay in LA and that's not a bad thing for the Kings either. We can use the picks or young talent. He's kept his mouth shut to the media so he doesn't reduce his trade value by demanding a trade.
On the other hand, that's not what a leader does...bail on your team when things are bad. It's not a great example to be setting.
In the end we let him go and get the most we can for him. Let him go win another cup. It won't cause me to lose any sleep.

I guarantee Blake will have no lower feeling than the day the Kings win the cup and he's not a part of it.

Mark said:

I'm going to have to defend Blake on this one. The last time we played Detroit we were on a major 5 game losing streak. Who wouldn't lose their drive when you go from a Cup Contending team like Colorado to a rebuilding Kings. On the other hand Good Bye and this time let us rip off the C from his jersey.

Trade Blake. Who knows we might get something good out of him from a trade.

Browns a great consistent player, I can see him gettin 30-35 goals this season, but I don't see him leading the team as well as Cammy would. Give Cammy the C and Brown an A.

I was jsut reading in the NY Post that NJ is also looking for a veteran derfenseman for down the stretch and they mentioned both Blake and Stuart. Also mentioned was Nagy. It may be nothing, but King's names are being thrown about across the country. It can only enhance their value.

It looks like this is going to be a sellers market and the best thing is that there are very few true sellers out there. We're one of the only ones. Everyone else is fighting for a playoff spot.
Hopefully we can get maximum value for the cr@p we currently have.

metalmaniac said:

Let us not forget that this is a business first.Part of the reason he was brought back was simply to pacify fans and keep them buying tickets. I
don't think DL resigned him because he thought Blake was the missing piece
to Cup puzzle. The reality is that Blake had to know that this was going to be a
.500 team at best so he should not be that suprised. Brown should be the C on this team without a doubt and if Crawford is
not smart enough to do it DL should.

Hockey Only said:

Blake knew darn well what the Kings were going to go through when DL signed him only reason he came back here was to get more money and then if he didn't like the way it was going he could waive his "No trade" clause, I think he really has shown his true colors to this organization. I'd send him to Manchester and bring Cloutier back before I'd trade him to a contender.
