Kings beat Vancouver 4-3

Pretty good road trip for the Kings with two wins in three games. They beat a likely playoff team tonight. The Kings raced out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Dustin Brown (team-leading 24th), Scott Thornton and Jack Johnson. The Canucks scored twice, inluding a shorthanded goal, to make the Kings worry heading into the third. But Alexander Frolov gave the team a little cushion and the Kings held on behind 46 saves from Jason LaBarbera, who made up for last night's bad game by getting first star. The Kings managed to win despite being outshot 46-24.

5 wins out of 6.
I can't help but consider whether the plaoffs are still a possibility this season.
If we continus win at this pace, who knows.

After yesterdays off day, JJ did manage to show most of you tonight.
Thoughts.

Barbs deserves a lot of credit for this win by weathering the early Vancouver storm and playing like how a #1 goalie should play. I also think that his positioning, movement and puck vision have been much improved of late.

It was also good to see the team respond and make up for a bad showing in Calgary.

Hopefully Crawfish's goalie experiment is over and just let Barbs most of the remaining games.

diehrdkingsfan38, I really don't think you should use this blog to advertise your website, imho.

Great win tonight.

Wow, great win and Babs has been just phenomenal. But someone ought to tell the Kings D that braindead giveaways night after night after night gets old quickly.

Kevin Dallman. 1 Second of ice time.
Bet he can't wait for the season to be over with, so he can tuck tail and run to another team.
If another team would be interested in him.
NOT!!!

For God's sake, anthony, give your head a shake. There is absolutely NO WAY the Kings are coming anywhere close to the playoffs this year. You can't just trash this team after another humiliating loss (i.e. Friday at Calgary) and then expect to make the playoffs after we escape with a win the very next day (i.e. tonight at Vancouver).

Honestly, I think the Kings played a grand total of 15-20 minutes of good hockey in this game. We had a solid late first period/early second, but aside from that, we really looked like a last-place team. But one thing was different: our goaltending was unbelievable tonight. Some games, it's not. But the problem is this team plays atrocious D, and we should consider ourselves lucky the Sedins were nowhere to be found on this night.

Turnovers continue to be a major issue, and the CBC crew was quick to point that out. If I can see this, and if these guys catching a typical Kings game can see it, why can't the coaches address the problem? Or is that they are addressing it, but the players just don't care? I'm sort of leaning to the latter on that one.

Anyway, a win's a win. I would've preferred beating Calgary instead, but I'll take a 2-of-3 western Canada roadie.

sasKing is right. The Kings didn't play 60 minutes of hockey and until they do I would be very uncomfortable with them making a run for the playoffs. Most likely they would end up missing the playoffs and lose a top 5 pick. I think they should start gutting the team now when guys like Blake are actually considered as having high trade value.

I gotta hand it to Crawford for going right back with LaBarbara. There have been times when he has saved the Kings butts and I think the problems with this season have more to do with the defense than goaltending.

Jack Johnson played a pretty good game. He reminds me of Paul Coffey with his ability to stickhandle, deke, and carry the puck to the net to make shots.

Have to agree with Quattro there, those constant "ads" from diehrdkingsfan38 are getting quite annoying.

Good win, they needed a bounce back from the big loss to Calgary and they got it. LaBarbera is getting a lot of shots on him though, that needs to be cut down...

Paul said:

This was another bad defensive game. The difference between this game and the Calgary game was the LaBarbara made saves.

And let's get realistic here about playoff possibilities. The Kings are 7 points behind 14th place Edmonton, and 14 points out of 8th place.

This is a streaky team. They have been all year. Once this little run is over, they'll go out and lose 6 out of 7.

We should be more concerned with the possibilities of getting Drew Doughty in the draft.

Gabby said:

Yes, LaBarbera stole that game for the Kings, but when was the last time we were able to say that a Kings goaltender stole a game for us? It happens for most teams occasionally, that they win on the back of their goalie, but that wouldn't have happened at all last season. Considering the Canucks are dead last in the league in shots on goal, I'd say Luongo has stolen more than a couple of games for them as well.

Go Kings!

All I want to see(or hear for the last 3 nights) is a hard working Kings Team. Winning is great side effect. Especially for the young guys.

As for the playoffs, even if(BIG IF) the Kings keep winning 5 out of six the rest of the way, they will end up with a little over 90 points, and imo, I don't think it'll be enough.

Lucas said:

I was at this game tonight (I'm a displaced Kings fan living in Canada) and sasKing is definitely on the money.

Labarbera was unreal and saved the ass of the Kings on 43 different occasions. The Kings have horrific defense. Crawford can't coach it and they have arranged their d corps with offensively-minded players.

These players need to play in a system that promotes quality defensive positioning first and then let them use their offensive talents second. It's the only way you're going to prevent 45 shot nights like last night.

Get a new coach.

The Kings are playing .700 hockey now...whatever happened to the Fire Crawford chants??? It's a work in progress, kiddies. Neither Rome or the Red Wings was built in a season.

The Kings need defense badly and some who can keep the puck in the zone when they are on attack. As for Dallman, they should move him to forward since he's got good quickness and is not afraid to hit. There is talent on this team. The management just can't see the forrest for the trees.

Bob Bobson, agreed....this season is pretty much toast. The Kings have played very few 60 minute games this season and even tho the score showed them ahead at the end, they were out played, again and badly. Only excellent goaltending saved them and you can't count on LaBarbara or anyone else to stand on their head for you night after night. The Kings are still having some major problems on defense.

We are getting to the point of getting down to the trading deadline and now would be a good time to look at exploring what we can get for Blake, Thornton, Modry, etc and take a look at some of our younger kids. Interestingly, Brian Boyle is having one hellevua year at Manchester; now might be a good time to take a look. I'd like to see Harrold get some ice time with the Kings but that doesn't look to happen in the near future. Since the Kings are out of the playoffs (barring a miracle from LA and a total collapse from everyone else), start showcasing some of LA's young talent. That of course will mean some trades to free up some spots on the big club which I'm sure DL is already considering....

Um.........we have won 4 out of the last 5 not 5 of 6. And we had all of our victories against teams to are struggling and will probably going to make the playoffs (with the exception of Dallas)And if you go back to the beginning of the year he are 4 of 7 which is just above .500
And after we loss to Detroit and Anaheim as our next two games before the all-star break. We will be 4 of 9 which will be just below .500.
All I was hoping for was going .500 for the start of the new year until the end of the season. So far this looks like it is going to happen!

I was pretty unhappy with Modry and Stuart, although every defender had their share of brain cramps. Someone involved in our defensive game plan needs to pay.

It wasn't a very good game by the Kings. Honestly, Vancouver gave up perhaps a half a dozen chances all game and we happened to score on them. LaBarbera was the only reason we came out alive. Well, Frolov had a good game too I suppose.

Who else saw how hard Giuliano was working tonight, especially on the PK? I'm happy to see him getting another chance up here and making the most of it. He does exactly what he's expected to do.

Well Anthony since you asked for thoughts, here's a couple of thoughts and facts.

Kings have won 4 out of 5, not 5 out of 6 - but it's still one of their most impressive stretches of the season.

After the Kings won three in a row, I seem to recall you mentioning that the playoffs were a possibility. Then they followed that by losing three in a row and you said there's no way they're making the playoffs. Now you think they're making the playoffs again? LOL

Regardless, I think the following will end any debate on the subject. Right now the 8th place team in the conference is on a pace for 94 points. It's pretty much much a guarantee that 8th place will be AT LEAST that many points because the 9th - 12th place teams are extremely close to 8th so only 1 of them has to play better than current pace to make the 8th place qualifying amount even higher.

But let's just say by some miracle that 8th place does only end up being 94 points. Well then all the Kings have to do is go 27-6 over their last 33 games to finish with 94 points (81.8% winning percentage).

To put that in even better perspective, the Detroit Red Wings, who have by far the best record in the league and routinely beat the best teams in the league, have only been winning at 75.5% so far this season.

Nice to see you're a die-hard fan but there is absolutely ZERO percent chance we will be going to the playoffs this year.

Just enjoy the wins as they come :)

Nice post geebleknob as it puts things in perspective for any fan foolish enough to think playoffs are a realistic possibility. Too
many points down with too many teams ahead and too few games left.It is not like the Kings are playing well consistently either.
Take a look at some of their upcoming games and tell me how they are going to win 75%-80%of their games. Anyone thinking this team can do that needs to get off the crack pipe. THIS IS NOT A PLAYOFF
TEAM. What they are is an inconsistent team capable of some stunning play usually followed by some
incredible shitty play. The only battle thay are in is to avoid being worst team in the league.
