Kings beat Rangers 4-2

Great game from Jason LaBarbera with 39 saves. Marc Crawford moved into a tie for 15th all time with 460 career coaching victories. Alexander Frolov took Dustin Brown’s place on the top line for most of the game and had a goal and an assist. Anze Kopitar set his new career high with his 21st goal and also had an assist for his 50th point of the season. Brian Boyle now has two goals in two games. Michael Cammelleri played 14:38 in his first game back from the ribs injury.

Nice win by the Kings. The Rangers looked tired and lackluster.

That Boyle kid looks big and plays big. He’s got a nice shot as well.

Sean Avery is probably the worst hockey player I’ve ever seen. I am so glad he’s gone and somebody else’s problem. There are far more talented and deserving players that aren’t in the league while he gets to display his talentless stupidity night in and out.

It was also nice to see Gomez and Drury look frustrated. Drury didn’t want to play in LA because “they are constantly rebuilding” Though he’s right about that, it was nice to show him a little glimpse of the (near) future. Your loss Dreary… I mean Drury..

    Go Kings!

Avery actually has a lot of skill. It’s a shame that he’s a head case and a disease in the locker room otherwise hed be a decent second liner.

Good win by the Kings. They outplayed the Rangers. It seemed to me the Rangers thought “this is the worst team in the NHL. Once we take the ice, we won.” I’m sure Ranger fans will light them up today on the talk shows.

Don’t look now guys, but the Kings have designs on getting out of the cellar. They’re 2 points behind Tampa, and 4 behind Chicago & Toronto.

Can you say Drew Doughty? :)

Nice road win over a surprisingly flat Rangers.

Blueshirts should have displayed more passion this time of the season, IMO.

When teams try to mail a game in at home, they SHOULD be taken
    advantage of, and
    we did just that.

    Frolov was dyno-mite with Kopitar/Sully.

And is Frolov brilliant battling and creating off the boards, or what?

How about leaving those 3 together, then when Dustin Brown comes back, have a 2nd line of Cammy/Boyle/Brown?

Then I think of Handzus on the 3rd line, and ever-improving Ivanans on the 4th…

    Me like big forwards. :)

Great win, full 60 minutes, good game to build on for the young kids. Let’s get out of the cellar and start showing what this team can do. Don’t worry about draft position, let DL take care of that. HE has plenty to trade with to move up or down in draft position

    Also, nice interview with Morris.

Great start by the Kings got them the 2 points they deserved.
Barbs was fantastic…just his usual crazy rebounds.
Frolov was the best player for the Kings. When Dustin gets back if he doesn’t pick up the physical play, I would move Fro to the top line. They were unstoppable last night.
It was nice to see Cammy return. I thought he played well for his 1st game back.
Having to listen to Sam Rosen, the Ranger announcer, makes me really apreciate Miller and Fox. He whined like a be@tch all night long. Micheletti is good, but Rosen is annoying as all hell.
Avery played his typical stupid game. He took bad penalties and the giveaway along the boards was brutal. Good to see it hapen to him. I was hoping at some point Ivanans would take him out.
I have to say I’m not impressed with the Eastern conference. They look weak as compared to what we face in the West.
The Rangers are 0-6-2 against the west and they’re in the playoff hunt. go figure!
One last thing….we beat up Crawford most of the season and were calling for him to be fired (myself included) I have to say, the guy has done a really good job of turning this team around, and I wouldn’t mind seeing him return again next year.

  • Paul

    @nykingfan

I wouldn’t go so far as to say the Kings have turned things around. Yes, we’re on a nice little run, and the defense has improved, but next week we could be back in a 10 game losing streak.

Right now the Kings are 8 games under .500 and have 47 points. Show me a .500 record and/or 80+ points and I’ll say I want Crawford back.

With the amount of talent the Kings have up front, this team SHOULD have been a solid playoff contender this year. But between the awful goaltending, swiss cheese defense, and constant line juggling by Crawford, this is what we ended up with.

It’s all at Crawford’s door for me, except maybe the lack of an NHL caliber goalie.

  • Ethman

It was a great win last night. The way this is team is playing maybe the #1 draft pick isn’t in the cards for next year. But even without it I think this team might do alright. Boyle is freakin huge. That guy looked great again. He seemed so calm during the course of the game. It’s always nice when you can roll four lines that can score (like last night).

I don’t know if you could hear it on tv but the ranger fans were letting the rangers have it. in fact people started filing out with 5 or 6 minutes left in the game, they knew the rangers weren’t going to catch up. It was also nice to see a handful of King’s jerseys in the crowd last night.

    Dan Cloutier on waivers?

it also says that Aubin is on re-entry waivers as well.

  • metalmaster

Kings are proving it is a lot easier to play when there is no playoff pressure. Bringing Crawford back would be a
mistake IMO and if they do I would expect a similar season. They outplayed the Rangers last night and still gave up 40 something
shots. It would have been nice if DL would have brought up some of the youngsters earlier in the year when they were still contending. I figured Harrold could do no worse than some of the d-men playing at the time and Boyle and Purcell could easily do what some of the other scrubs were doing.

  • John Roy Morgan

I like the young guys coming up.

I will be impressed if the Kings win the next 4 games. I think this will be the test to show the future of the team.

  • Maverick

I must say that Frolov was just absolutely unbelievable. The Kings had better get rid of Cammy before Frolov in my opinion if they ever have to trade an offensive talent away. As far as I am concerned Frolov is a Franchise winger for the Kings. He cares about the organization, signs alot more reasonable deals and is just absolutely irreplaceable with the puck. Come 2010, I really hope Frolov gets his raise and new paycheck from this organization, he deserves it.

Matt- I would love to see you press DL and Crawford and follow up on what came out of the Morris interview re: Boyle. His comments that Boyle should have always been up front are interesting and I’m curious who pushed to keep trying him at D and why. I’m not looking to jump on DL or Crawford but it is worht pursuing to understand what was the intent. And the comments from Morris that Boyle was wondering if he “had done something wrong” is great insight into what goes into developing a player.

Did they communicate w/ Boyle well enough that it wasn’t his fault? Did they consider the fact they may be delaying his development as a decent forward by trying to force him into a position he may not be suited or comforatable in? Did they try him at D because they needed someone in that slot or because they truly thought he would be better in that position?

Nice win last night, here are my quick thoughts:

    - It’s great seeing fellow Kings fans on the road, there’s a good instant camaraderie

    - Fave sight of the night: Two guys who were wearing Kings jerseys and on the back their names were “Duck Suck” and his buddy “Sharks Suck.” That is just awesome.

    - @Ethman, it’s true, Boyle is f’in huge, maybe HE should be named Brian “MoFo” Boyle. The Ranger guys next to me started calling him Sasquatch

    - I actually thought overall Barbs did a great job of not giving up rebounds…or at least he held on at key times

    - After the game I watched the TV broadcast here and they had interviewed Thornton between the 2nd and 3rd periods, I loved what he said…it was what I wished Blake said. when asked what’s it like being on a team out of it he said “it’s exciting b/c of all the young talent here and it makes it fun”

    - let me mention again for the record that Big Foot Boyle is huge

    - I’m really starting to think that maybe Deano is right…what we really need in our draft is a top defensemen as opposed to necessarily Stamkos if we did win the lottery (although people can argue that we can trade down the draft to get a pick and the defensemen we want). I didn’t feel great about our offense early in the year but I feel a lot better now…maybe one more sniper?

    - I want to see J-Quick in goal before the season is over.

    - I love the props that Fro is getting here, he allows the Kings to sustain so much pressure in the offensive zone and he never gets credit for how tough he is on the puck…I almost forget that he’s 25…

    - I too wanted to see Ivanans The Terrible absolutely clock Avery. I loved how Stuart refused to get into a fight with him…
