Kings transactions

Erik Ersberg was brought up from Manchester in an emergency recall because Jason LaBarbera is out with a groin injury. Apparently, the injury had been bothering LaBarbera for a couple weeks — though he hadn’t previously mentioned it to us — and Crawford said it took a turn for the worse recently. Cloutier will get the start in net tonight.

Then the Kings claimed Matt Ellis off waivers from Detroit. Ellis, 27, had two goals and four assists in 35 game for the Red Wings this season. He is 6-foot and 207 pounds and has 51 career games in the NHL. He’s been an energy-line guy. It looks like the Red Wings were trying to send him down to the minors, but he had to clear waivers first and the Kings swooped in. He will wear No. 8 on his Kings jersey. An addition: Ellis isn’t expected to arrive for tonight’s game.

Unfortunately, this means Lauri Tukonen is back down before getting to show what he can do. The Kings’ 11th overall pick in the 2004 draft played 9:48 in one game.

I don’t know if I would say Tuk actually played… he skated around a bit.

  • anthony

What the hell is wrong with this G.M. Is he playing with a full deck.

It’s not the goalie situation that bothers me. If Clouts is injured we do need a reserve.

But with all this alleged talent we have in our system, why would we pick up another tool bag like Matt Ellis. I don’t know anything about Ellis, except the fact that he’s scored 2 goals in 51 games.
Then why would anybody waste a spot on the roster on him. Especiallly when you have hungry players in the Minors waiting for their chance to produce for the Kings.
Why not give Moulson, Boyle, Meckler, hell even Trevor Lewis the opportunity to learn more about the big leaugue. It did wonders for O’Sullivan, now he’s on pace to score between 17-20 goals. Poor Tukonen. He was called up to show the team what he’s got. What a cheap shot he received playing 1 game, 10 minutes on a line with Ivanans & Guiliano. There’s a pair of hall of famers if I ever saw one.
And this BS reasoning by Dumbardi, “I Don’t want our prospects to be in a losing environment”. What a joke. What’s wrong with learning the system now, to prepare these players for next season. Let them have these 20 games to develope their skills. Remember how strong O’Sullivan finished last season (12 points in the last 14 games).
All we received from Waivers is another Wilsie or Thornton. Players that will not be returning next season.
I know for a fact that Dumbardi is not the right man to lead this team in the future. With 2 years under his belt, he’s produced losing seasons. In Taylor’s tenure as G.M., I can’t remember being in the cellar let alone last in the division.

Why send the kid down when Ellis isn’t suiting up? It doesn’t look like Crow is fond of this kid. Being his final year of entry level it doesn’t seem like he’ll be a King next year.

  • Tito Jackson

    There goes the playoffs

  • JB

I’d rather see Ersberg down the stretch to judge how he plays. But I suspect Crawford stays loyal to Cloutier and puts him in. Oh well…..

  • Vilela

    LMFAO
It’s gonna get ugly tonight. BTW, I think it was a stupid move to send Tukonen down in favor of Ellis (who?).

  • Featuring Rudy Ray Moore as FROLO-MITE!!!!

Here are the vitals for Matt Ellis:

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=2884&hubname=nhl-red_wings

Hasn’t done squat so far in the NHL, but looks like he can put up some points in the AHL….

  • nykingfan

I wonder why Ersberg and not Taylor?
Maybe thats why Barbs has looked slow post to post lately.

  • nick

labarbera has always looked really slow post to post. that’s his biggest weakness. he accentuates his weakness by playing a traditional style of going out to challenge the shooter.

  • BallPointHammer

Given all the circumstances, I think it is a good idea to see more of Cloutier and maybe some games for Ersberg. Taylor seems to have improved to the point where he’s in the mix, but he’s better off in the AHL for the rest of the season.

As far as Ellis, the Kings will need bodies with all the ‘selling’ at the deadline. He may very well end up in Manchester anyway.

This is to all the people bashing Dean Lombardi – The more you talk the more you expose your ignorance, short sightedness and naivet. Get over it – the Kings are finally building the right way. It will work. And when it does, you owe DL an apology.

  • heya

It didn’t make any sense putting Tukonen with Ivanans & Guiliano anyway. If anything I would have sent down Purcell because this kid needs work in his own end, and he’s soft as butter. Needs to learn how to utilize his size better.

BallPointHammer: Dean Lombardi has alot to prove. Keep in mind, DL hasn’t won anything. Where’s his cup? He’s doing the exact same thing he did in San Jose and it wasn’t good enough. Sure, he has a different approach than Dave Taylor, but both of them failed to take it to the next level. He’s made MANY mistakes already(Dan Cloutier signing being one of them), I think he deserves some heat.

  • Paul

Are you guys gonna hammer Lombardi for EVERY move he does? For all we know, he grabbed Ellis just so he can dump him in an upcoming deal next week.

And I’m not sure I buy a “mysterious” groin injury for LaBarbara. It wouldn’t shock me if they told him he was benched because he’s being traded. He’s certainly not a #1 goalie.

And since I’m continuing my tradition of bashing LaBarbara, his biggest problem is NOT his post to post movement. It’s the fact that he never catches any pucks. Ever. He gives up more rebounds then any goalie I’ve ever seen.

Let’s please allow the next week to play out and see where we end up. I’m sure Lombardi will do his best to improve the team.

BTW, if I’m not mistaken, NHL roster restrictions come off on March 1st, so the Kings could call up all the Manchester prospects they want after that date.

I’m sure we’ll see plenty of Boyle, Lewis, Moulson, Tukonen, and all the rest that you guys are in love with.

“Why send the kid down when Ellis isn’t suiting up? It doesn’t look like Crow is fond of this kid. Being his final year of entry level it doesn’t seem like he’ll be a King next year.”

because he couldn’t really make it to LA in time for the pregame skate? certainly not without meeting with the coaches and GM first to explain WTH they wanted him for. and they had to send someone down to create a roster space. that only someone was Tuk. he’ll be back, let’s not cry over it.

  • Freezang

So you’d rather have Tukonen up here playing 9 minutes a night and losing instead of 17-20 minutes down in Manchester with a shot a winning some games?

Why wouldn’t you want your young stars in some sort of playoffs some where instead of wondering if they will ever win a game again. Bring them up for short sperts, let them see what they need to work on. Send em back down and work those hting out down there. I could care less if we had 6 Brian Willsie’s to finish off the season with. Its just greedy as a fan to try and give some of these kids full time jobs in the NHL especially if they aren’t getting more than 10 minutes a game

  • diehrdkingsfan38

Ohhh now i know why it’s not televised here in L.A. At least they really know how to excuse themselves. The fix is on (Just Kidding)

    A move that means nothing.
Nothing lost is nothing gained. If he turns into a player DL looks like a genius and if he is a scrub
    as his NHL stats indicate
    nobody will ever remember.
DL may send him down to Manchester and call up a
    kid for all we know.
Modry a -2 tonight in his
    Philly debut vs. San Jose.
DL did not get stuck with
    Briere and a huge contract
for a player who is -22 and
on the verge of getting booed out of Philly. Same
    goes for Chris Drury. Good
    players getting franchise
player money can kill you in this league.

anthony, way to tell it like it is. I’ve been saying that about Dumbardo for months and no one listens. I am so frustrated as a season ticket holder I am boycotting tonights game. like thousands of others. It is absolutely insane to send down Boyle and claim another clone of Willsie, Armstrong, Guliano, Calder. It is also a shame that our defense is out hit every game by our leading goal scorer. Why not find someone that will provide some protection for our goalie and talented young forwards Dumbardo? How about a defenseman that hits and makes you pay the price in front of the net.

i love reading this blog after a long day. you guys are hilarious…

on that note i think it’s a good idea if we all take a little bit of a rest from dissecting every non-trade player move/transaction until after the trading deadline.

the simple fact of the matter is that we can’t differentiate between which players are being showcased and which are getting their chance to shine in the NHL…

I dunno the rules of engagement but maybe there is some benefit for taking Ellis off waivers and then trading them back to the Detroit? (perhaps in a Blake trade). anyhoo i think we should just chill out until after the deadline

    ducks suckingly yours, shakes

  • Gord

    Screw Blake.

  • Gord

    Changed my mind. Blake’s Ok.

  • Pierroth

Wow, these comments are amazing funny to read in the third with the Kings leading 5-0. Nice job, bandwagoneers.
