Jim Fox No. 1

Daily News media columnist Tom Hoffarth’s list of L.A.’s best and worst game analysts appeared in today’s paper and Jim Fox got the top spot. Here’s the full list, at the bottom. I have to say, out of all the teams I’ve covered, I’ve never seen a television announcer there in the trenches at practice doing research for the broadcast as much as Foxy.

Awesome Foxie deserves it, Bob Miller not in consideration or VIN SCULLY?! They are both Awesome at what they do. I think Vin Scully is a must and i think Bob Miller coulda sticked into the top 10 but i would give him a top 20 spot.

Not sure it means much coming from a guy who thinks Brian Hayward is seventh BEST (and not in the “worst” category). He even writes that Hayward gives “A Stanley Cup-caliber performance every night.” You have got to be kidding me.

  • Matthew Kredell

Diehard, Miller and Scully fall in a different category. This is game analysts and they are play-by-play announcers. I believe that list is still to come. Scully is the annual No. 1 and I’m sure Miller will be up there as well.

I never thought much about Jim fox until i started watching games done by other anaylsts in the NHL and i was horrified (i.e. columbus announcers) They are nowhere near Jim fox’s status, professionalism and caliber!! keep it up Jim..
oh and just to add in.. Bob Miller is by far the best play by play in the league imo (i know im biased)

No you see having center ice gives you a good chance to hear the other tv announcers, and i cant tell you anyone that holds a candle to what Bob and Jim do. But then again isnt Bob in the hall of fame as an announcer?

  • diehrdkingsfan38

Ohhh Matt, i thought it was both. Thanks, great job on “Inside the Queens i mean Kings” Just kidding..

  • BallPointHammer

Jim and Bob have both been among the very, very best at their jobs for a long time. They do the Kings’ organization and fans proud every night.

Glad to see Hayward voted low. I hate the guy. By the way, Foxie never has anything insightful to say. He says things like “If you don’t shoot, you can’t score”. Thanks genius. Daryl Evans > Jim Fox.

hayward is WAAAAAAY too high. he deserves his own category in “worst broadcaster of all time”.

  • kingofdodgers

Great work with all the interviews and insight.

I nearly had a heart attack when I read the title because I instantly thought that Bob Miller was retiring…. If that happened I would be blown away… But yeah, Foxy definitely deserves it. LA is very blessed when it comes to sports broadcasters and such. Bob Miller is just God.

  • Eric K

Heyward does a stanley cup caliber job of praising the ducks at every opporunity and assuming anything against them is either luck or terrible refereeing. try mentioning that… or writing WHY jim fox is #1. deserved, though!

    bob miller = #2. hopefully.

  • Maverick

    @ Eric K

This is for best analyst. Not best announcer/broadcaster. Its for the individual that adds colorful commentary to the play.

  • Gary B

Hayward had a great insight on the game last night. “Score! That’s just what the Blues needed at this point in a tied game!” Really?

I’ve been watching games for a long, long time now, and I realize this will not be a popular viewpoint, but Bob and Jim are now like nails on the chalkboard.

I actually look forward to Kings games NOT on FSN/Prime (or whatever it is called these days), just to hear other announcers.

You add to the mix the horrible and pathetic ramblings of Patrick O’Neal, and you have perhaps the worst threesome in the sport.

The duo of Nick and Daryl on the radio is far superior to what we get on television.

  • Nick

there is not a chance they’re the worst trio in the sport.

o’neal is terrible and i’m not a huge fan of how fox does things (though i usually think his insight is wonderful, he’s just not a very good speaker), but miller is among the best in the game. the only broadcasts i’d rather listen to are vancouver’s for hughson, and washington’s.

If you’ve been listening to Bob long enough, and can remain objective, you have to realize that he is a great big homer. You combine his homerism with Foxy’s Eric Dickerson-esque insight, and you have a recipe for tired and sad coverage of the Kings.

  • Anonymous

The last poster is clearly just trying to get a rise out of everyone. Whether you like Bob Miller or not, you can’t call him a homer if you are being honest about it. He frequently flat out says that the Kings are playing awful, without inspiration etc, and when the other team scores a nice goal, he sounds almost as excited as when the Kings score.
