Crawford interview

He talks about the Calgary game Friday, the road trip, adjusting to being back home, Cloutier, Boyle, Harrold and Moulson, missing Blake on the power play, the injuries to Blake, Nagy and Thornton and why Harrold and Moulson were sent down when the injured players aren't ready to return.

``It’s nice to be home. It’s a great place for us to play and we should probably play half our games here.

``We did have a good road trip. That first game back is always traditionally a tough game. I talked to our guys about making sure you’re totally ready and not surprised about the intensity of the game. Calgary has been a pretty good club this year. They’ve had great bursts both at the start and end of games, so we have to be aware of that. We haven’t beaten them this year, so that’s got to be ammunition for us – last chance to get a victory against them.''

``We didn’t have a lot of time changes over the two weeks, which probably helps us a lot. We worked our way back here playing in the central time zone our last game. It will be three games since our last game, and that’s always the best way to come back. Hopefully we play with the same intensity and vigor we’ve been playing with. I think our guys have really attacked the games and played with the type intensity you need to in order to be successful. We’ve played better defensively. We’ve drawn a lot of penalties. If we can get our power play going then I think we can get a string going here.''

On Cloutier: ``The coaches down there were all very favorable in their remarks with how he conducted himself. Especially the last couple of weeks when he was ready to play again, they felt his game was coming around. We didn’t get to play him another game in there but he’ll play in this three-in-four. That’s the reason we made the change. We knew we had a lot of three-in-fours that we wanted to be able to rest Jason a little bit for. Dan played well in Columbus. It was a great win for him, one he can build on. You look at the injury he had and his play this year was hampered by the fact that he needed to really get rehabilitated. They had to shut him down for eight weeks and it has since been less of a bother for him. He’s always going to be conscious that he’s got to stretch it out and be aware of the mobility he’s got in his labrum. He’s a butterfly goaltender and they put a lot of pressure on those hip joints. Knowing that he’s feeling good about his body right now probably allows him to feel better about his game. He had a great game for us in the first one and we’re looking for much of the same effort from him the next time he gets to play.''

On Boyle: ``We’re stressing for Brian to really get in on the forecheck and use his size, have a good stick when in on the forecheck, use his reach, keep his feet moving when he has the puck and when he’s forechecking. We always want our whole team to be aggressive and put a lot of backside pressure on our backcheck, so there’s nothing different there than are stressing with our other players. But for Brian definitely to use his size, use his reach and make sure his skating and reach are being utilized all the time.

I think he’s played very well for us. I think he uses his body really well. He’s great in front of the net. When he gets his hands on the puck, he’s a threat to score because he’s got a good shot, a long reach and he’s got a good release. From that standpoint we’ve been really pleased with his contribution. He’s still got some things to learn about coverage. He’s still got to pay attention to the details I spoke about a few minutes ago, and if he continues to do that then I think he’s going to be a pretty good player. I see no reason why he shouldn’t be a guy who scores at a pretty good clip here. And, on the top side, if he continues to show progress and continues to be a guy who handles the puck well and create offensively, he can be a top-six forward. Not a lot of guys can do that job. I think definitely he’s going to play and play regularly in the National Hockey League. Where he sorts out, time will tell.''

On Harrold and Moulson: ``I thought Harrold played well. I thought Moulson played well. I think we got energy from having those young guys in the lineup, and the infectious energy it gave our other young players. I think it pushed players in our lineup as well, and you want to have a healthy dose of competition within your group. Right now those guys have gone back, with the exception of Boyle, and I’m sure this is not the last we’ll see of them.''

On power play difference with 35 pp goals at home and 17 on the road: ``We don’t change a great deal of what we’re doing on the power play based on if we’re home or on the road. I think of late we’ve missed the shot of Rob Blake, and we need our other defenders to really focus on establishing a point shot because it opens up so much for your other people if the opposition’s defense is wary of the shot coming through.''

On the injuries: ``Rob came in this morning and was here most of the morning. I think he’ll be re-evaluated either tomorrow or on the weekend. He’s not going to play this weekend, at least not the first part of it. He scheduled to have an MRI to confirm that the healing has continued. He feels pretty good, and I don’t imagine it’s going to be much longer.

``Nagy's improving, but slower. He wears a brace while driving. He had two procedures done to his neck. Both have been to try to speed the healing process along.''

On Moulson and Harrold being sent down: ``We want to make sure guys are playing. I think that’s probably the reason they went down. We thought we had a few guys closer to being able to play. Willsie is able play, obviously. Thornton, who had been injured, looked like he was ready to play but tried today and wasn’t ready. I don’t think Blake will be much longer.''

With the up coming GM meetings next week, Matt can you get from DL where the Kings are going?

I have been a king fan for 32 years. All this time I have not been able to find a reliable source to go to for inside information like this. Now you have a fan that is checking your blog on a daily basis. Thank you and a great job.

I am glad to see Boyle is staying. He is a great player with a lot of hidden potential. I was happy with how he played for us in the first couple games for LA. I have zero complaints if he is our "Holmstrom", I think he has the ability to do it and be just as big of a nuisance in front of a goalie

Good for Boyle, the 2003 draft was amazing; we can only hope we can get another 1st rd pick this year and that the 2008 draft is equally as bountiful.
