Crawford post-game interview
I thought his most interesting quote was that Boyle and Purcell were pushing some of the other guys, specifically singling out Calder. He also has some interesting stuff on the two rookies, including the thought-process behind the organization trying Boyle at defenseman in Manchester. He also talks about Boyle making Frolov and Armstrong better. I'll have player quotes coming up in a separate post shortly.
``It’s a fun team right now, especially with our young forwards coming in and contributing the way that they are. Tonight we talked about coming out here and having a real strong effort, making sure the effort was right at the forefront of everything we did, and I give big kudos to our entire group. I think the play of some of our younger people, especially Boyle and Purcell, was pretty special. Maybe it’s pushing some other guys. That’s probably as good as Calder’s played. He plays well like that and hangs onto the puck like that. Both he and Handzus looked pretty good with Teddy on their flank.
``The other guy I thought had a very strong game out of character maybe or out of the norm was Kevin Dallman. He scored the goal, I thought he was strong on the net and he threw a lot of hits.''
On Purcell: ``We thought when we signed Teddy last year that he was a sure-fire NHL prospect. He was a guy that basically every team in the NHL made an offer to. Dean and Ron and Jeff Solomon did a great job of convincing Teddy to come here. I remember the talk was that, by the time the season rolls along, you’re probably a guy who’s going to be in the lineup, and they were right. He’s worked hard, played real well at Manchester and, right now, because we’ve got a couple injuries, he’s getting his opportunity and taking advantage of it. He’s been better each time he’s come up here. I think we’re developing guys hopefully the right way and you’re seeing the fruits of it right now.
``Boyle is just such a big body. He scored a great goal. You see his hands tonight on the goal. Then you see his big body just create so much space on the other goal. He’s a handful to handle in front and it creates some openings for players who can dangle and handle the puck like Frolov and Armstrong.
``Those guys were really good tonight but I thought our whole team was very good, especially playing against a team that’s desperate like Calgary. They’re trying to get first place in their division and trying to maintain that playoff spot. We know we want to play in these types of games and we want to keep seeing our guys responding.
``Fro has been pretty good from Christmas on. Unfortunately we had a number of guys playing hurt in December so he played where he was favoring his injury, but he’s gotten stronger now and I think the team’s playing better. They’re all kind of understanding what allows us to be a good team with the puck and Fro, when he's got the puck, has some real special talents and he’s showing them.''
More on Boyle and why he was moved to defenseman for part of this season in Manchester: ``Looking at our depth in the organization, we don’t have a lot of real top-flight young defensemen coming up. So we saw this kid who’s 6-7 and played defense on PKs at Boston College. So that’s where the idea kind of came from. And we all knew that if he played on defense it would really help his defensive game. And for most young players that is the process they go through. You have to learn to play without the puck, you have to learn to compete, and we thought he could do that at the defenseman position. As it turned out, his foot speed probably wasn’t good enough so, around Christmas, we made the switch back to center. He had played center on most of the powerplays down there and was still scoring so we all knew he was a pretty good offensive player who has a good shot. He has the chance to be a very good player. He’s going to have to continue to work, continue to use his size, use his reach and keep getting better at the competing and battle levels throughout the game. We love his size, love his shot, love the fact he keeps his head up in the offensive zone, and I think we can teach him the other stuff.
``I just think he’s getting more comfortable playing with the puck and playing in situations we’ve been able to put him in. He’s excited right now, obviously, to be playing in the NHL and when you're excited you're going to work your absolute hardest to maintain your position here, so think that’s what is happening with Brian right now.''
Very exciting future this team has. Alot of youth and talent that's finally coming together.
I'm glad to see Sully back on a line with Kopi & Brownie. It hurt my feelings to see Cammi come down with the flu. Brought tears to my eyes. I'm sorry, but the Sully-Brown-Kopi line just seem to work with more chemistry.
And after seeing Army with the "A" on his sweater, it makes me wonder if there really is a flu or if Cammmi is on the block. Or both.
I also enjoyed watching both Boyle & Brownie toss Phaneuff around like a girlie doll.
Now if they can only keep this sort of intensity against the Coyotes tomorrow. After losing 4 straight against them, we've got a score to settle with them.
And finally, someone throw Cammi under a bus. Oh never mind mind, let me do it.
A positive step in the right direction. These rookies have a long way to go before the kings organization can become a true contender. What this organization lacks now is solid prospects on defense. And this is going to be the kings Achilles heel for some time to come. Unless Dean Lombardi can address this problem with some good trades or the upcoming DRAFT.
It's amazing watching these young kids come up and fit right in...In some cases dominate. Craw is right, this is the best Calder's looked and it's probably because of the young kids pushing him.
I look forward to watching every game now and assume they will win the games. I haven't had that feeling in years.
Kudos to Dallman on a great game. He was involved both offensively and defensively.
Can't wait until we kick ass tonight.
How awesome was it watching Phaneuf on his ass after Dustin nailed him. Same when Boyle nailed him.
GO KINGS!
It's amazing watching these kids grow up before our eyes. This is a different team than it was in December. So much fun to watch.
Question: I'm not so down on Cammy as lots of you guys but does anyone think he's a player we could trade for a quality D man? And if so, who?
awesome game. i've gotta say that last night's game was the level that i thought we could play at the beginning of the season. i don't mean that we'd score 6 goals a game but we created lots of hard working scrappy ones around the net.
...and it's good to see Brownie hitting out there again...
i don't care where we are in the standings, i just love watching the team improve and give us great hope for next season. i love the nearly minute-long Staples standing ovation at the end too.
Ducks Suckingly Yours,

Proposed trade - Kings and Nashville - Squid for Ryan Suter. Preds are 8 defensemen deep and he's going to be a restricted free agent. On occasion he's been singled out (unfairly) by the coach Barry Trotz. Preds gain a much needed top forward and the Kings gain a d'man for the next 10 years.
