A better idea
The CBS show ``60 Minutes'' is reporting this week that David Beckham has an option to buy a MLS team starting in 2011, after his contract with the Galaxy expires. Maybe AEG should keep the Galaxy and let Beckham buy the Kings. Beckham might not know how to run a hockey team, but, well...
Rich, I thought you were better than that. AEG is the best owner of any franchise in LA and cannot do anything more to help the Kings win.
The owner's job is to give as much money as possible to the team (new arena, new practice facility, ability to spend to the cap......) while giving control of the team to the right person (Lombardi). Though the results have not been there yet, AEG is doing everything right.
The Bill Plaschke's of the world and misinformed King fans are the ones who blame the owners and we all know that you are way above that.
I just want to note that, despite my above post, I cannot be thankful enough to the job that Rich has done this year covering the Kings and I check the site numerous times a day. It is also obvious that Rich knows what he is talking about and is extremely educated about the Kings situation, which is why I was disappointed in the latest post regarding ownership.
Brian,
I am floored by your admiration of AEG. Could you please provide some reasons why AEG is a superior ownership group to Artie Moreno, Frank McCourt, Dr. Buss, or even Donald Sterling?
I want to buy the Kings some day, and have Bruce McNall as my advisor. He gets things done. I am dead serious too.
Evidently results are secondary to following some unwritten script that fans are supposed to accept.
I wish Tim Liewicky would stop posting on this site.
Rediculous, the amount of money that swine is making.
Pat,
I have already stated how AEG has done everything possible that any owner can and should do. What else can AEG possibly do that they are not doing already?
Here is why AEG is better than the remaining LA owners:
1. Artie Moreno - first off, I don't consider the Angels in LA but he changed the name from Anaheim Angeles to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, which is a negative but he's a great owner, though he still has not done anything, that is his responsibility as an owner, that AEG has not done.
2. Frank McCourt - as a Dodger fan, he is a terrible owner, he has littered Dodger Stadium with adds, doubled our season ticket prices and is way too involved in decision making (he has fired 2 very good GM's and hired a terrible one). I also believe that the payroll has a limit with him as owner.
3. Jerry Buss - too involved in the running of the franchise (or his family is). This gets in the way of letting the right people run the franchise.
4. Donald Sterling - seriously? Are the Clippers even allowed to spend to the cap?
The Clippers are a developmental team for future NBA players. Everyone knows that!
Brian,
While I couldn't possibly disagree with you more, I appreciate your reply and thank you for taking time to list some reasons.
Go Kings!
No one mentioned Ducks owner. It's not the owners you "dummies" It's the talent they sign! Look at Ducks they are loaded with talent. Nice to watch Ducks and Dallas thats old time hockey at its best. But you clowns would rather watch Kings and Coyotes????
I don't believe rich meant what he said, but rather to report an interesting story about our owners in a zany way.
And on what makes an owner good I believe you have to allow maximum salaries, as AEG does, but why some don't like AEG is they aren't involved in running the franchise which means they don't hold people accountable. While everyone answers to Lombardi pretty closely, not the same can be said to Lombardi closely being held responsible to AEG. the debate is whether this is really a problem, and depending where you side is if you like Lombardi or not.
I don't see how can get a better owner than AEG. The put up the money and STAY OUT of the hockey decisions. OK...well...most of the time.
The owners in Detroit nor NJ nor Colorado nor even Anaheim get involved. They let the management DO THEIR JOBS.
Artie Moreno and owners like that always make it seem they are "doing something" but when it comes down to it they do little. Moreno hasn't won squat. Buss always seemed involved but he had West to do the work, as it should be done. Buss isn't good because he is involved, he's good because he let's the basketball people do what they are hired for.
Brian are you a new Kings fan? AEG has owned the Kings long before the Lombardi era. They are giving Lombardi carte blanche now, but that hasnt always been.
If you think AEG built Staples for the Kings, you are SADLY m,staken!
Practice facility... I'll give ya that one.
Ability to spend to the cap.... like I said, you must be a new Kings fan. Taylor constantly had problems with rsgining ans signing guys because of stingy AEG pockets.
Well, at least AEG is not as bad as The Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund Group...
Boylefan (and Rich - possible blog topic at the end of this),
I have been a King fan since the 80's. Staples was built by AEG and name another owner in LA who has built the arena and practive facility for their team. Also, your complaints of AEG involve their past unwillingness to spend. Was it because they were cheap or because they knew that a cap was coming? Nobody really knows.
Regardless, as of right NOW, AEG is a great owner that does everything that a great owner should do: (1) gives the team as much money as possible and (2) stays out of the way while leaving the management of hockey operations to the right person (Lombardi).
I have had this conversation before and this might be a good topic for the blog, Rich, but here is a question that makes people realize how great of an owner AEG is:
Simply as the owner, what else can AEG possibly do that they are not alerady doing NOW? I have yet to hear a good answer to this question other than to show up to games, but I don't think that a "Mark Cuban owner" is necessarily a good thing.
Good owners hang up championship banners. Period.
