Ducks 2, Kings 1 (shootout)

Here's the AP game story from tonight...Quotes to come as they're available...

-----

Mathieu Schneider and Teemu Selanne scored for the Ducks during a shootout and the defending Stanley Cup champions beat the Kings 2-1 Wednesday night to clinching a playoff berth.

Ducks rookie goaltender Jonas Hiller, filling in for the ailing Jean-Sebastien Giguere, ended the shootout at the end of six rounds when he blocked Brian Willsie's shot. Dustin Brown had the only shootout goal for the Kings.

The Ducks already has assured themselves a spot in the postseason when they were tied at the end of regulation, since they needed only one point to clinch.

Patrick O'Sullivan scored for the Kings in the first period, and Anaheim's Bobby Ryan tied it in the second.

The Ducks made the playoffs for the third year in a row, and the sixth time since they came into the league as an expansion franchise in 1993.

The Kings, already eliminated from the postseason, haven't made the playoffs since 2003.

Hiller, starting for the third game in a row, made 31 saves for the Ducks -- including a dramatic one with time running out in regulation.

The Kings' Alexander Frolov stole the puck from Schneider in the Kings' zone and skated off on a breakaway. He bore down on Hiller, feinted to his left then tried to slide the puck behind the sprawling goalie on the other side. Hiller blocked the shot with his left skate, with 17 seconds on the clock.

Kings goalie Erik Ersberg, like Hiller a 26-year-old from Sweden, had a fine outing, stopping 39 shots.

Not to overlook that wonderful choice by Crow to use Willsie in the SO!
Way to show you want to win a game Crow.

Hiller is from Switzerland

Was at the game tonight.
Quack fans remind me of the Rocky Horror Film Show.

Both goalies stole the game. Thought Sully was gonna steal it in the SO.

Wonder whats happening to Cammy and Frolov on Breakways. Both aren't doing so well om the breakawys lately.

And Crawfish must have been smoking meth off a tin foil when he decided to use Wilsie, of all people, in the SO. He must want Stamkos too.

Crow went through Sully, Kopitar, Brown, Squid, and Frolov. Those remaining are pretty much useless in the SO. Wilsie, Armstrong, Zeus, etc would be lucky not to trip over the blueline.

Hey anthony, you are the star in the rocky horror film show together with your quackfriends.
But I agree on the choice of using wilnot in the SO is patetic.

FTFY and a comment...

Comparing quack fans to the Rocky Horror Picture Show is not only an insult...but degrading to the Rocky Horror Picture Show...

Ersberg continues to impress even after the loss...

Why would anyone pick Willsie for a shoot out? I thought I heard wrong listening on the internet, Willsie?

Paul said:

First off, if Ersberg is the Kings starting goalie next year, you can look back at this game to see when he made his case. He STOLE a point for the Kings.

Secondly, watching the game last night reminded me of why I hate the Ducks broadcast crew so much. They're just clueless. Every shot by the Ducks that doesn't go in either hits the post or somehow bounces off a defenseman. Every shot the opposition that doesn't go in is a hall of fame save by their star goalie. And there's NEVER been a penalty correctly called on the Quacks. EVERY call against them is a bad one. It's sickening. They're not the worst crew in hockey, but they're close to it.

Thirdly, why was Wilsie even dressed?? He hasn't done anything on the ice in 3 years. And to put him into a shootout? Well, at least we know what Crawford really wants the Kings to do. Way to send a message there coach!

Unbelieveable game by both goalies. That was fun to watch. I can accept the 1 point based on the play of Ersberg. We were completely dominated in the 3rd period, but he kept us in the game.

Willsie????????????????
I would have thought he would come after Cloutier in the shootout order.

I'm going out on a limb here, but Alex Ovechkin may be the greatest player in the history of this game. If he can get Willsie to score 19 goals in a year, he must be the greatest.
I've seen pee wee players with more imagination on the breakaway.
Crawford must be rewarding him for being a good soldier and sitting in the stands most of the year, to the delight of all Kings fans.
Does it really matter whether we get 1 or 2 points there? We're showing we can play with any team in the league, even when we have nothing to play for.

I agree with NYKF. The Kings continue to show they can play with the supposed best teams in the league more times than not...even if they can't beat them consistently yet. And if Oaflov nails one of the clearest breakaways in NHL history with less than 30 seconds to play, we'd singing a different tune today.

' "Kings goalie Erik Ersberg, like Hiller a 26-year-old from Sweden"

Hiller is from Switzerland'

yeah, what was up with that? I also heard them refer to Ersberg as "Swiss" near the end of the 1st period.

another error, I believe this one intentional, was that they said "nobody played the Ducks tougher than L.A.", and the Kings and Ducks TIED the season series last year.

bupkis!!! The Kings won the season series last year. the difference in records was negligible, but look it up. I thought these idiots were supposed to be professionals?

as to the shootout, I'm starting to believe Crawford intentionally threw this. not that it matters, but I think the Kings didn't feel like putting the next-best shooter out there to try to go for the 2 points. Willsie??? has he ever shot a penalty shot in his life? Visnovsky and even Handzus and are clearly better. maybe even Armstrong. I bet Craw was smirking after that one, knowing the Kings wouldn't move any higher in the standings. I guess he couldn't have thrown Guiliano out there or it would have been too obvious...

and to what nykingfan said: with all the injuries we have, and nothing really left to play for, it's amazing we're still involved all these 1-goal games especially vs. teams in the playoffs (and winning half of them)

Frolov too many moves, and he likes to get in too deep so he's very vulnerable to the poke check - and all the goalies know this. this has been the case almost since the shootout began which is why they don't select him more often. but the Kings don't have many other shooters that are any better, so they're kind of obligated to throw him in there once in a while. don't get me wrong - I'm one of his biggest proponents but a shootout master he's not.

Cammy hit the bar, same as he did at the end of OT. I don't think I've ever seen that happen... a guy hits the crossbar to end the game and then again in a shootout. it's almost like his puck was magnetized by Lombardi (lol). he's OK, just not as good as Brown or Sully

For those of you that think that MC deliberately threw the game, get a life! If he truly wanted to throw the game then he would have had Zeiler, Klemm, Ivanans take the first 3 shots and not Kopi, Brownie and Sully. Fyi, Willsie has a reputation for a good shot. Just because he hasn't scored much as a king doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't have a good shot. You do recall when Garon was here, he did go on record and said Willsie has one of the best shots on the team. It's a loss, get over it.

duck announcers make me sick. Jonas hiller is the next patrick roy and according to haywayrd "LA has got some american league caliber defenseman, so look for anaheim to exploit that major weakness."

Love that we gave up one goal!

Remember before we get too excited about losing. The Ducks were without Getzlaff, Perry and Pronger. They still dominated us without that talent. We were very lucky to pull out one point in that game.

I do agree with the comments about their announcers. They suck.

Willsie was 3 for 8 on the SO prior to last night. He was an acceptable choice.

Brent said:

I just think we're too predictable in SO's.

Kopitar always comes in from the goalies left to right and then tries a back hand slide or a little wrister, he just needs to shoot.

Brown always head fakes, waits and fires it upstairs, it works but I have no idea how.

Osully was a good choice, his little low blocker shot always works but the puck rolled on edge.

Cammalleri has been such a non factor lately it's sickening. How do you go from being sooo good to being nothing. Literally he did as much as wILLSIE did and he's supposed to be one of our top notch guys.

Frolov makes me sick on breakaways and SO. He has never once lifted the puck it's all long lanky ugly moves.

And Willsie, ugh come on.

Everyone knows HIller is a butterfly goalie and to shoot high, and what did we do, slide the puck on the ice.

brianguy, prior to last night, Alexander Frolov had taken ONE shootout attempt this season (he missed) and prior to missing last night, he was at 50% in his career.

he is now 7 for 15 in his career, Anze Kopitar is now 8 for 16 and Dustin Brown is now 7 for14. aside from Patrick O'Sullivan's 4 for 4 (now 4-5), Alex WAS their overall top shootout performer. why he wasn't used more this season is anyone's guess, but it certainly wasn't due to any scouting report... necessarily.

conversely, Mike Cammalleri is now 3 for 10... why is he being used in the top 4?

Frolov was pretty good very early on when the NHL shootouts began. since then he's been just barely average. I agree with you that he hasn't shot many times this year, as already mentioned.

"LA has got some american league caliber defenseman, so look for anaheim to exploit that major weakness." too funny. enjoy your 1 goal you smarmy pr*cks
